The difference in those two statements is nothing, semantics really .

My apologies. I thought you got it, but maybe not. The two statements are SUBSTANTIVELY different, not just "semantically" so. In terms of evolution one is true (monkeys and humans DO share a common ancestry) and the other is false (humans did NOT descend from monkeys). Statements that are merely semantically different cannot have different truth values.

Get over your paranoia. Although not religious myself I regularly defend Christians when there are none present (or willing) to do so themselves. I live in a college town and frequently come across clymers railing ignorantly against "fundamentalist" or "right-wing" Christians. I have never once, when this occurred in my hearing, failed (albeit with varying degrees of irenic gloss) to denounce them to their faces as bigots and hypocrites, embodying the very dogmatic intolerance they posture as opposing.
