I realise that to some dispassionate scientists, evolution is simply a theory that explains things well enough for them to question why others don't believe, and is not meant to be used as for political purposes or to demean or discredit religion.
But those scientists are in a competition for the "meaning" of evolution with people who hardly understand science but do hate religion and want a weapon to destroy it.
For a typical example, simply look at today's (Sunday Dec 18) Doonesbury, where Gary T. takes another of his predictable swipes at (mostly conservative) religious people regarding creation.
This is the real battle, and the scientists are caught in the middle, clueless or unconcerned about how their discoveries are used in the real world.
I sometimes like to pose this in terms of a moral dilemna, in this case from a scientist's point of view. The typical scientist would have no problem whatsoever with discovering the cure for aging. They would happily produce the cure, maybe even offering it to the world for free, all the while having no thought about how they are destroying the human race by their discovery.
Do you think that every word of the Bible is literally true, or do you believe that some of it might be parables or fables, such as those Jesus told his disciples to make various points?
I'm not trying to be flippant or sarcastic, and hope you don't take my questions as such. It's sometimes hard to convey meaning with no facial expressions or intonations.
Biology is not a required subject.
If yo step over into the smokey backroom you will find what the debate is about. All of science, especially physics, is under assault.
It is in my state.

Just thought you'd like to know; the judges retracted.
Good on the judges. If they were mistaken, they should apologise and set the record straight. But like I said before that little dustup isn't dispositive of anything, I just took pleasure in the ACLU getting a little comeuppance. As it happens maybe they didn't get what they deserved but the deserve more opprobium than they get. Life goes on and we await the decision of the 11th Circuit in Cobb.
