Did he claim to be one?

I've not come across any record of him claiming deity status. He's been accused of doing so, though.

"He's making DUmb statements on other threads, too."

Yep. I question the wit of a DUmmy, who would have what she consider to be a mythological figure, wear Birkenstocks.

So materialistic. So Eurocentric. Tsk tsk tsk.

Are you claiming that I, for instance, didn't used to be a Christian, when for many years I had a devout belief in Him?

The claim is that you were never a Christian. A Christian is someone who has met Christ, personally, and has a real and personal relationship with someone. It would be pretty hard to do that if you current profess a belief that you don't believe. Kind of like saying your mother never existed, or your first high school girlfriend, even.

Christianity isn't simply claiming to have a "devote belief", it's knowing, believing beyond all doubt. It's personally having a real relationship with the Christ.

Since your "devote belief" evidently didn't include that, you couldn't have been a Christian. You were just playing one.

You know what, I bet everyone of these knee jerks on their death beds are going to be praying up a storm to God.

Doubt it. But perhaps shortly after their death bed.

Joseph Smith??? Oh!! You mean the name that everyone uses when they take their girlfriend to a motel and dont want to use their own name. Must be a million Joe Smiths in the motel industry.

I'm not claiming anything. I don't know your heart. A Christian however does not loose their belief. They might backslide but they always know who they belong to.

I do know my heart. I assure you, my Deist beliefs are not just backslid Christianity.

*cough* True Scotsman Fallacy *cough*

Not arguing the topic, just the validity of that construction.

Joseph Smith's story isn't all that off from that.

Yeah, right. Except for the actually influencing the world part. Don't claim the 1 million+ Mormons. Even Joe couldn't have done what he did without Jesus' influence. Thanks for helping prove the point. ;-)

It's simple. If you really were a Christian you are a Christian. If you aren't a Christian then you weren't one then.

Just curious as to your take. I know you to be a reasonable intellectual, and I believe you profess to be an atheist, and I'm wondering if you support what these guys in the article are up to. Like to get some reason here on this thread, if you don't mind.

Ah...well that would set him apart from Christ.

Ah, but the tale offered up as proof of His divinity not only doesn't emphasize His claims to Godhood, but doesn't even use it to qualify the proof.

Instead, it makes the claim that, essentially, since he was an uneducated nobody that was executed as a young man and still had a massive effect on people religiously, then He must be a God.

Unless you are claiming that the story shows not that He was God directly, but simply that what He was saying must have been true - and what He was saying was He was God. In which case one could conclude that Joseph Smith was not a god, but what he was saying was true. So we all better become Mormons.

Are you claiming that I, for instance, didn't used to be a Christian, when for many years I had a devout belief in Him? Or are you claiming that I am still one even though I no longer hold that belief?

Luke 8:13 describes your situation.
