Even if he makes No. 1001, that would be okay. He could be the first in the death penalty millenium, or something like that.

Well, this delay only seems reasonable. What's insane is that DNA tests haven't been already. If DNA evidence could really exonerate this guy, then it should have been done a long, long time ago when the tests were gaining both credibility and popularity.

If it turns out he's innocent, are you still going to be upset that the execution was delayed?
