ASSociated Press- His push to legalize gay marriage throughout Canada also raised the hackles of Republicans south of the 49th parallel, but Martin is widely respected worldwide for Canada's neutrality and open arms toward immigrants and minorities.

People I know, if anything are not surprised and could not give a crap about gay marriage in Canada. If anything it would actually give a close enough place for the homos to go.

This is nothing but AP exposing themselves as seeing every single event under the sun as "Republicans against the world" mentality because they hate Republicans that much and can't hide it.

Every PM has been from Quebec since then (short monthly stints by Clark Turner and Campbell excepted), and all their principal lieutenants were/are from Quebec.

Now that is something to think about, isn't it? The last halfway successful Anglophone Lib PM was Pearson, 40+ years ago. Of course the last non-Quebec Tory who lasted more than a few months was Dief.... ;)

I have all the confidence in the world that the Canadian Conservative party will wrestle defeat from the jaws of victory.

I'm somewhat more optimistic that the latest poll trends (Libs slipping slightly in Ontario) will continue. OTOH, my advice to Harper and McKay would be to duct-tape shut the mouths of half their caucus members. ;)

They no longer have to worry about holding onto the Red Tories. Those types would vote Liberal in the current climate anyway. The Conservative Party has to play the hand its dealt and it has to do what it can in the face of a very uneven playing field.

The newfies are upset because they wanted a new constitutional accord that would give them control over fisheries and resources in their own territories.

Given that Newfoundland only became part of Canada in 1948 by a slim margin and have been abused ever since their grievances are understandable.

The crash of the cod fishery is the direct result of Ottawa siding with the fish packer's unsustainable harvest practices and the lack of nerve on the part of the government to curtail international poaching primarily from Spain.

The Spanish have fished out all their native fisheries but because deep water fisheries were subsidized by the Spanish government, the grand banks off the coast of Canada were depleted by Spanish factory ships while Newfoundlanders where not allowed to fish.

Of course the Newfies are pissed, they've been skrewed coming and going.

Meanwhile one of the most expensive and favored breakfast dishes in Barcelona is Cod Smelts on Toast.

Cod smelts are 'baby' cod.

The Spaniards and the Japanese are raping the oceans to feed their sushi and tapas bars.

Spain and Japan are stripping the oceans of fish that the rest of us may never get a chance to taste.

May they both go to hell.

The BC Liberals and NDP share no common ground with the Federal Liberals and NDP. It's like they exist on different planets.

That's always the case, but the last poll I saw had the federal BC Liberals at 35 per cent, with the CPC's 30 per cent and the NDP's 29. There is a lot of speculation that BC Dippers will vote Liberal to keep the Tory vote down.

Very true. The outcome of the House vote was without much suspense. The election may be another matter entirely.

The NDP stronghold in BC go Liberal in a federal election. If you did a split survey, you'd find the seat share roughly matching the seats held by the equivalent conservative party in a province. Of course, Quebec is the exception. Jean Charest's conservative Liberals are hugely unpopular there. Its expected the PQ will pick up the francophone ridings held by its sister federal party in the next provincial election so the split seat divide in QC is very much an anomaly.

Every one knew the Liberal Government's days in office were numbered the moment Comrade Layton withdrew his support - ironically over the issue of the Liberals not going as far to stop privatization of Medicare Canada as the New Democrats wanted.

Is a conservative MP in canada like a John McCain in America ?

Yes. But without the ego...

You are correct but the BC vote is too small to make a difference.

I think that Layton will see his biggest losses in his and his wife's Toronto ridings.

My prediction is that the shift in NDP support will go to the Liberals and will lead to a slightly larger Liberal minority government.

I think Layton killed the federal NDP. You can see it in his eyes. He blew it and he knows it.

Duceppe is laughing his bag off. He doesn't even have to campaign.

Independents don't last long without a party. Carolyn Parrish rejoined the Liberals after a stint in the political wilderness. MPs have more influence inside than sitting on the sidelines - even if they're mere backbenchers.

What was in it for Layton? You can't be that idealistic. He could have lowered his price and let the Liberals decide whether they wanted to buy him out.

Of course, and BTW I agree with beaver fever's point about Layton coming out on the losing end of this. During his comments to the press after the vote, he looked like a guy who thinks he might have just thrown the baby out with the bathwater. In contrast with Martin, who looked like an idiot prancing around like a high school cheerleader.

Layton over played his hand. The NDP has not and never will be a national party and they have rarely been in a position to influence a minority government.

They had the chance this time and Layton blew it by preaching to the choir.

As Alpha said, "You loose Buckwheat!"

The BC vote is certainly small compared with Ontario and Quebec but if there is a significant shift it might help partially offset the all-but-certain Liberal meltdown in La Belle Province.

What I can't figure out is why all the armchair pundits, like on www.nodice.ca, are still predicting big totals for the NDP or CPC in BC.

" Heh heh. Might ask the folks in Etobicoke-Lakeshore about that first part. Sorry, couldn't resist. ;)"

Yeah I know what you mean. Sometimes you can just buy the riding, road, sidewalk, lawn.
