WHY NOT KEEP SOME REAL TEXTILE MILLS OPEN THAT REALLY PRODUCE FABRIC AND REALLY EMPLOY REAL, LIVE PEOPLE RATHER THAN SENDING THOSE JOBS TO CHINA AND MEXICO?

That 's a question better asked of the labor unions that priced themselves out of a job and the politicians that have regulated and taxed the mills to death.

A small town in my homestate has a 'vacant building festival' in the summer. This sounds almost, but not quite, as interesting.

Best use for an old textile mill that I've seen is in Danville, VA. The AAF Tank museum has taken over what looks like a old mill. Went for Father's Day last year, the place is awesome. Probably 6 acres under one roof, with everything from WW I to modern day.

Doesn't have much to do with textiles, though.

And Kelly and Seymour agree with you!

"Class, instead of going to the Box Factory today, we'll be going to the . . . Box Factory." (Principal Skinner, The Simpsons

"We sat around with his parents and they showed me slides of their vacation to the Ticonderoga Pencil Factory. The #2 pencil is the backbone of the industry." (Kelly Bundy, Married . . . With Children)

Men, your gratuitous Kelly pic:

attract tourists to communities devastated by plant closings and job losses.

How can someone write this article without mentioning Gastonia, NC the capitol of the southern textile industry?

Gastonia and Gaston county have probably lost more textile jobs than any other area, yet the population is still growing and unemployment is fairly low. How did this happen? I don't know, but if you have ever been to Gastonia you know that it definitely isn't because of tourism.

Gastonia has become a bedroom community to Mecklenburg County employment centers.
