If you're employed by GM, make sure you thank your Union rep., as it is they who are running companies out of business.

In my humble opinion, here is what GM needs to do: totally re-arrange its divisions to minimize overhead and overlapping models.

I would structure GM like this:

Chevrolet--will become all family cars, from the small "captive import" Aveo all the way up to the Impala. The Chevrolet division will no longer sell SUV's, minivans and light trucks. The Corvette will stay a Chevrolet model due to long historical legacy linking Chevrolet with the Corvette model.

GMC--move all truck, SUV and minivan models to this division.

Cadillac--will remain GM's luxury division in the USA and increasingly Europe.

Opel/Vauxhall--will phase out Vauxhall name and have all European models sold as Opels.

The Buick and Pontiac divisions will be phased out.

The union mentality is really something! In a very small nutshell, I left home at a young age, put myself through college, and worked at some of the biggest companies in the world to get where I wanted to in life. I called a union carpenter to come over and just LOOK at a flooring job I wanted done (in the house I bought with my own efforts), and he wanted me to PAYYYYYYYY him to DRIVE over and LOOK at the floor!!!!!!!

Can you believe it? I who never thought anyone should give me anything am asked to PAY some bum for a drive. All the interviews I went to to get jobs, all my certifications I completed to make myself more valuable to the market, these things you must pay for yourself. And this guy just wants free money!

Another union guy was complaining in a bar that in two years the "companies" didn't have any work to "give" him. I asked why he didn't start his own business, he gave me a dirty look.

It's only natural they can't compete. I'm sure we all have such horror stories.

Can we pin this one on NAFTA and GATT, or are the unions to blame for this monster?

Breaking on Bloomberg and Reuters. GM will cut 30,000 jobs in massive restructuring. More...

As the head Honcho of Delphi sez not to long ago, that no Company in this time and age, will survive paying $60.00 an hour(benefits combined) for unskilled labor. Amen brother!

Me thinks we should start them all at minimum wage, and based on the ongoing process elevate them based on merits, not on Union arm twisting.

Benefits?...just like me and others...you are going to pay your share like I do($585 every month premiums, plus the deductibles)...if you can not live with that?...you need to look for another line of work.

To sum it up, it looks that the 1900's gravy train is finally drying up, and the freeloaders start squirming.

GM's declining fortunes can be summed up in three letters: U-A-W (and its leftist-symp criminal co-conspirators in the DNC.)

Perhaps this will inspire the few Congressional Republicans who still have testicles to push Justice towards a RICO action against the union. God knows such a prosecutorial effort is only 75 years overdue!

The local US Rep (Tim Ryan)in the Youngstown OH. area wants the Govt to drop a few billion down this hole. Can't wait until he's on a local talk show fielding calls about it spouting the "if we can pour billions into Iraq we can bail out GM"
I'm going to ask him, why instead of just giving GM billions of dollars, doesn't the US govt just buy a couple of hundred of thousand cars from GM and give them to people receiving govt aid. Let's just have Washington buy all the Katrina evacuees new cars.
