Bully Pulpit and the ability to keep the frickin' lege in session until they dang well do something.
Nooooo.... *I* was the one that suggested that the fact that the WH Press Secretary is the son of one of W's old crony's from Texas smacks of favoritism, especially since he isn't very good at the job.
Most of us believe the Harrie Miers nomination was nothing but cronyism, as well as Paige, Rove, uh.... Julie Myers, uh... come on folks, help me out here.
Founding board member of Austin Community College (1973), mayor of Austin 1977-83 and don't forget - former state railroad commissioner. It'd be interesting to look up records of her past activities with those entities to get a better idea about her ideologies, though doing it by computer would probably be a challenge since I doubt a lot of records from those time periods have been digitized. FOIA anyone?
There also seems to be a relationship with Austin area gadfly Sal Costello of Texas Tollparty, who has also slid himself in with people and groups opposing the Texas Trans Corridor - he's been credited with getting Strayhorn involved with the TTC fight. Costello may have some interesting friends himself, since I've seen some of his stuff associated with the Bush Is Hitler/No Blood For Oil/Stop The War crowd.
Some bloggers have some input about her strategies and odd friends.

But Strayhorn has a plan -- get Democrats and Independents to vote in the GOP primary.

"Let me tell you, speaking as Republican precinct chair here in Harris County, which is the largest county in Texas, that this strategy does not sit well with most Republicans I know. We have this crazy idea that if you want to use the votes of Democrats to get the nomination for governor, you need to run in the Democrat primary. Given the current candidates for the Democrat nomination, I suspect that the nomination would be hers for the taking. It is time for her to go back to that party and seek the Democrat nomination (which she might not get, having abandoned that party once) so she can face Perry in the fall -- and lose.
I'll make you a prediction right now. I'm sure that the Perry campaign and the GOP on both the state and national levels will make sure that every signature on every Democrat nominating petition (and those for Kinky Friedman) in the state is broken down by local precinct and distributed to the precinct chairs for purposes of challenging cross-over voters. After all, Strayhorn and her supporters are correct in noting that a voter can vote in either primary on election day. However, what needs to be considered is that the same law has a limitation on that choice -- if you have signed a nominating petition for an independent or a candidate for particular party, you forfeit the option of voting in the primary of a different party. Those of us serving as election judges will have some idea of who the outsiders are, and we will be ready for them."

Strayhorn to be "Special Guest" at Fundraiser for Democratic State Rep.
By Byron LaMasters
http://www.burntorangereport.com/mt/archives/000728.html
"Carole Keeton Strayhorn is the Republican State Comptroller. Pete Gallego is one of the Democratic Killer D leaders, so seeing Strayhorn listed as a special guest for Gallego's fundraiser is quite a surprise. Generally being "special guest" at a fundraiser implies that the guest is endorsing the purpose of the fundraiser and the purpose of this fundraiser is to raise money for the Pete Gallego campaign."

Just you wait until I'm able to run. I'll have plenty to say from the git go. I can even begin to think about running until 2010. After that my obligation to Uncle Sam will be finished. Note to whoever is governor at that time: watch out, I'm coming for you job.
DUH thats why I directed my question to you.
...that the fact that the WH Press Secretary is the son of one of W's old crony's from Texas smacks of favoritism, especially since he isn't very good at the job.
Most of us believe the Harrie Miers nomination was nothing but cronyism, as well as Paige, Rove, uh.... Julie Myers, uh... come on folks, help me out here.
Most of us? Who is us?
To call the fact that the President surrounds himself with people he knows and trusts cronyism and favoritism is disingenuous at best. Every president, in fact, most effective management, will do the same.
You don't like the people Dubya chooses - we get it! I love most of the people Dubya has assigned (Rummy, Cheney, Condi, Peter Pace), so I trust his judgment.
You'll really have trouble selling the cronyism argument after the Impeached Rapist's reign - where they had to lessen security requirements just to get most of them clearances. Then what happened? Sandy Berger, John Deutch, Janet Reno, Bill Richardson and the classified nuclear disks. And let's not forget Bernie Schwarz (sp?) and Loral. THAT'S cronyism!
Makes your anger over inarticulate McLellan, light-on-the-resume Miers and a mean ol' hurricane look pretty trivial, doesn't it?
ok.
ok.
Perhaps you're right.
