That seems like a nice idea, but wouldn't any "Christian" group acceptible to the Chinese government be nothing but a puppet religion? I'm a Roman Catholic and if I were on a trip to China I'm not sure I could attend Mass because, as I understand it, the Catholic Church as recognized by the gov't in China is a state-sponsered organ. Correct me if I am wrong, please.

I like it, but many of them are underground for fear of the Government. Worshiping in open is mark for imprisonment or worse. Still, I love the idea and commend the President for it.

Any Mooslims in China? President Bush is going to have a tough time convincing the Chinese that Islam is a "religion of peace".

He is much braver than I, and I am bullet proof, sometimes.

Any Mooslims in China?

China has millions of Muslims, especially those from Uighur background. Islam has been in China almost immediately after Muhammad.

Which Democrat will, or has been designated to come forward and criticize and try to embarrass President Bush while in China or any other country on his trip?
There's always that when in need stand in and Nobel Laureate Jimmy Carter.

Islam is divided. It really is that simple. Bush chooses to emphasize the less radicalized part, and to label the other part as outliers.

You choose to label the entire religion and anyone in it as if they are all bin laden, Zawahiri and Zarqawi. You are not half so clever as you think you are. Neither are your types who post their snide attacks on every thread.

I know what the Koran says. So what? Like I said, the truth is, Islam is divided, including over the meaning of passages in the Koran. Even ones that seem to you to be invontrovertibly violent are not taken that way by a lot of clerics.

Yes, there are muslims in China. China seems to keep it pretty quite, but there have been terrorist like activities in the far West (Xinjiang province). Although, it seems the primary motivation is to reestablish a muslim state that used to exist there long ago (not directly linked with the Al Qaeda fulfilling prophesy types)

Nice try, but the Bush family's closest Muslim buddies are the Saudis, and you don't get much more fundamental than the Wahibbis. Remeber Saudi Bin Laden family members were allowed to fly around the country when Americans were grounded after 9/11.

What's the matter? Can't a few hundred million Muslims control a few thousand radicals? Islam is NOT a "religion" of "peace". Disagree? Prove it. People like you need to clean up your own back yard before you preach to people like us. I'm sick and tired of Americans and other non-Muslims and other "infidels" dying for Muslims because you have been far too tolerant of and passive in your acceptance of "radicals" murdering "infidels" like me. "We don't condone violence, BUT ..." You read your Koran? Good. Then I'm sure you'll understand when I say I'll label the entire Muslim religion any way I damn well please.

/anti-Muslim rant

Why the inappropriate comment? Your homepage says you're a Christian.

Your post doesn't seem like it......

The President, a Christian, is seeking other Christians to worship with. He has testified of his faith to the leaders of China. Why belittle your brother in Christ?

W's trying to pull a coup like Reagan did in the USSR when he asked to personally meet dissidents (by name) and embarrassed the Soviets on the international stage. The remarkable thing about Reagan's tactic was that his visit wasn't just fighting the Reds in the negotiations, he actually made possible freedom for many, person by person.

W's at least reading from Reagan's playbook, and the personal stuff matches his personality, but I'm not as hopeful it'll work in this case. It seems to take a lot more to embarrass the ChiComs, and doubt any given Chinese dissident could feel safer having met Bush.
