Or title it CYA, even if that's the memorandum's only purpose. You would go out of your way to avoid terms and phrases like that.

I have read Mapes' arguments. I think she does not understand the evidence.

I tend to agree with you. No one but a child could maintain her position if she truly understood.

Of course, I can't rule out the possibility she *is* a child, emotionally.

Someday, when the Lord makes the media a footstool under our feet. Seriously, we HAVE to find a way to defeat this cabal, or junta if you will. They are getting our soldiers killed and it is unacceptable. We need a Soros on our side that will buy out at least one of these networks and start operating it like it should be operated. How can we do this? Likewise we need to take over the Republican party. How can we do this? Are we really just a splinter group? Must we wait until the next major disaster to get the people on our side again?

The forgery of the memos were on par with the Niger documents

It's just bull. You don't need an expert to know that a memo written 40 years ago can't possibly line up exactly, EXACTLY(!) with something somebody cranks out in thirty minutes on his computer in Microsoft Word using Times New Roman. It's simply impossible. Smaller probability than the monkeys producing the collected works of Shakespeare.

Look Irish Thatcherite! Now you're not only a Digital McCarthyite - you're a Klansman, too.

Mary Mapes has gone off the deep end.

I'm an anti-Bush guy, and I know Mary Mapes a little. She's a neighbor. But I hope you'll stick with me even if you're at the other end of the spectrum. Listen, some of my favorite neighbors are pro-Bush, and they're surprisingly decent people.

He says something insulting and expects us to stick with him? That is where I quit reading.

Exactly. A journlalist had damn well be able to prove their documents are genuine. Do I have to prove everything I read is fake, and if i can't, i should assume that it is true. Complete liberal non-sense. Mapes is a washed-up feminist loser who is pissed at the world. I think she would be better suited for science fiction than news.

Her husband works for a company I call the Realm of Daily Darkness, otherwise known as The Dallas Morning News. There are indications he himself may not be evil. . . .I've never seen him abuse his pets.

This from someone who complains about 'haters and extremists' as if he himself is not one.

i>I don't want no trouble, I can vote how I want on election day'.

I was just thinking about how we used to have curtains for privacy on election day. A booth. Not any more. Wonder why they stopped that, and I wonder if that's taken advantage of by intimidators anywhere.

the documents she and Dan Rather based their story on were never exposed as fakes.

The documents were never exposed as authentic. No claimed originals were ever revealed - just repeatedly faxed & photocopied duplicates. The originals could not be exposed as fakes because there were no originals to examine - which points squarely at them being fakes.

In her book due out this week from St. Martin's Press, Mapes insists that the documents are authentic.

Then, again, produce the originals - or at least an equal produced on vintage technology without special handling (the "th" required special effort on a document no sane person would expend special effort on).

The people who made the most adamant accusations at the time were anonymous amateurs on the Internet, not known experts.

How is it that anonymous amateurs could, with trivial effort, produce an exact copy right down to the superscripted different-sized "th" and kerning?

And yes, the Internet made it easy for known experts to weigh in. They, being extensively knowledgeable about modern and vintage printing technologies, explained in excrutiating detail how the documents had to be fake on a remarkable number of levels.

Well IIRC, the curtains were from the old days when there were "poll watchers". Now days the people who are allowed in the voting room are severely restricted.

I couldn't vote back when we lived in Mississippi, so don't know for sure.

My cover's been blown. I'm not a documents "expert."

I'm just a guy who saw a few thousand typewritten military documents in the 1970's. And I'd bet a Ruth's Chris dinner that Mr. Chrome Coast or Gold Coast or whatever was never in the military or around military documents, unlike many members of this forum.

The Observer is a Dallas liberal rag. The mayor used to write for it. It holds no journalistic merit whatsoever. It is worthless as is the drivel from this clown.

"A 'smooth factual mesh' is exactly what you want in a disinformation operation."

"Muck Fapes!"

...and her sniffling self-serving revisionist dissemble of a book. Mapes, Rather, CBS, et al, lost big time in their own slander plot. Truth is posterity's witness. Moxy Mapes should be ashamed as hell. A pox on her house BUT NOT ON HER DOGS! Mapes and Rather just relished bringing-down president Bush with a presumed explosion of smudge to obscure the obvious treason and lies as well as the disordered thinking of John Kerry during critical days before the election. Leftists/"liberals" and democrat demagogues are pathological liars, and they embrace the good old neoMachiavellian axiom of Marxism (& Mao): the end justifies the means - use any dishonorable means to win.

"If CBS could have proved the documents were fake, then all the blame would have been on Mapes and much less of it on CBS."

Not what the CBS legal staff reasoned, I'll bet'cha. I think they were more than just a little worried about being charged with a felony for breaking the law in Texas and/or federal law concerning the transmission of phony documents, or some such thing.

Regardless, I'll never believe a major news organization would attempt to unseat a sitting president just before an election with such a picayunish charge. Maybe that's all they could come up with on such short notice and were not able to bury all the bodies first -- metaphorically speaking, of course. ;>

In their haste to get this story out to co-incide with another major assault on the presidency a few days later they didn't take time to nail the coffin shut, in a manner of speaking.

Even if it the charges were true, did CBS really think such a sophomoric plan would suffice and became the silver bullet after the general public had already been pre-conditioned to let bygones be bygones by all the Kerry crap which had already saturated the country?

Seems instead the bullet backfired and became a petard which would force CBS to hang from its own coatrack for a fortnight or two.

Naughty, naughty, CBS. Tsk Tsk. Granted you had the bluster, but you didn't have the courage to pull it off.

One of many intriguing points in Mapes' book--a thing I shouldn't have had to be reminded of--is that the documents she and Dan Rather based their story on were never exposed as fakes. In her book due out this week from St. Martin's Press, Mapes insists that the documents are authentic.

There are two morons here (1) Mapes and (2) this reviewer.

Somehow all of a sudden everybody and his blog was an expert on 40-year-old typewriters and proportional spacing.

Yeah, but in the subsequent days, the well-credentialled experts on these subjects weighed in on the matter, and they all agreed with the self-appointed "blog" experts. And the experts which CBS itself had chosen and paid to opine on the authenticity of the documents, all came out of the woodwork, gave their names, and explained that CBS hadn't given them the actual documents, and they had not told CBS that the document was authentic, and in fact one said she had told CBS she had serious reservations about it -- just based on a copy the faxed to her. So we all understand that the CBSers don't trust FReepers' expertise on this topic, but since they also don't trust the expertise of the experts they choose themselves, WHO THE HECK DO THEY CONSIDER QUALIFIED???
