"It was a pretty large model, yet ingratiation was the strongest predictor.

"In fact, there weren't other predictors at all."

Although brownosing may get you to that top position, and better pay etc, its a lot more fun to be an anti brown noser and give the boss hell when he deserves it. That is what I do, and the upper level bosses respect me....as they deny me promotions....oh well.

I don't know how brownoser look in the mirror every morning, but they do.....denial is a wonderful thing ain't it?

Brown-nosing, suck-up butt kissers never made much headway in any of the organizations I ever ran. I used to personally meet with and tell every new hire that the fastest way to go nowhere but out was to brown nose and/or play politics. Whenever anyone would try in a staff, general or one-on-one meeting, I'd embarass the hell out of them every way from Sunday.

Early in my tour at Hickam AFB, HI in the 1969 to 1972 timeframe, we got a new director, a colonel, who came directly from Vietnam. About four months after he arrived, he had a 1lt who had worked for him in Vietnam reassigned to our unit. The 1lt, who made captain shortly after he arrived, was a shameless a##kisser, continuously sucking up to our boss and the director. He also had the bad habit of backstabbing his peers, the EM and even those who outranked him who were outside his reporting chain. Particularly annoying to me were his attempts to claim credit for my work. We all were curious about why, if the boss liked him so well, he had not been selected for Regular.

About six months after I rotated to my next assignment one of my former NCOs gleefully called to tell me that the AFMPC (Hq AF Personnel people) had sent a team to Hickam AFB to counsel officers who were not expected to progress in their careers what their options were. This turkey was one of the officers counseled. It turned out that when our director left Viet Nam the man who became the 1lt's boss was one of the people he had screwed over--and he had the 90 days of supervision that allowed him to write the 1lt an OER that finished his career! Justice was done.

Whenever I watch situations like that, I remind myself that karma is a wheel may grind slowly, but it also grinds very completely and finely.

It has proven true quite often, or as I like to tell people, watch the toes you step on as you go up, they may be attached to the a## you must kiss on the way down
