427 spills annually

Do you know how oil was discovered on the north slope in the first place?

- There are literally thousands of NATURALLY occurring surface oil seeps, oil bubbles NATURALLY to the surface of the little pothole lakes in the (short) summertime.

The native people of Kaktovic and other north slope communities (who, BTW would love to have a little oil revenue to finally afford indoor toilets and a reliable power supply) have been burning mats of oil soaked tundra for heat and cooking for much longer than the white man has been around!

from what I've read, this is not the wildlife preserve the sierranuts believe it is..it's nothing more than frozen wasteland, no trees, no mountains, no animals, no nothing

Irregardless of what you think about drilling for oil in ANWR, the above characterization is very inaccurate. The entire ANWR is a huge preserve with mountains, rivers, lakes, tundra, and of course, wildlife.

Most of the controversy is over the "1002" area, which is a coastal plain. While not as picturesque as many other parts of ANWR, the coastal plain is a very important place in the life-history of the Porcupine caribou herd, the largest herd of caribou in North America (perhaps the largest herd of any wild hoofed mammal in North America). The coastal plain is the main location where the calves of the Porcupine caribou herd are born. The location is preferred because it provides some relief from mosquitoes and bot flies.

I'd prefer that drilling for oil was elsewhere, but my opinion doesn't count for much. I'd truly prefer an effort to wean the country from petroleum use for vehicle transportation that would make drilling for oil in ANWR a moot point. But I don't think that's going to happen in time.

Here's a picture of part of the Porcupine herd:

More info:

The following article describes what might be affected by oil drilling in ANWR:

Potential Impacts of Proposed Oil and Gas Development on the Arctic Refuge's Coastal Plain: Historical Overview and Issues of Concern

I hope you won't be angry with me for posting this information. I've consigned myself to ANWR drilling, and I hope for the best.

See post 44. Please read the accompanying text I wrote with it before replying in haste.

Yes, I've seen that picture. The article I linked to in #44 indicates why the situation for the Central Arctic Herd near Prudhoe Bay is somewhat different than for the Porcupine Herd.

C'est la vie.

" Please define "traditional", as you may be using a definition far outside the normal understanding of the word."

I believe they refer to it as "pre-Columbian," meaning as it was before Columbus stumbled upon Hispaniola.

I wish everyone could talk to my neighbors -- or more Alaskans would post here and elsewhere -- these groups are totally distorting the facts about ANWAR, Prudoe Bay, etc.. I just think they hate the USA and love having us dependent on foreign oil for crude and processing... perhaps they won't be happy until we are all under a Chavez-like regime... and I will not forgive John McCain his vote on ANWAR I will vote for someone other than him next time he comes up for election.

Sierra Club instructs members on how to write letters on ANWR

So, like, are they going to strip naked and lay themselves out on the tundra to make letters?

I know the PETA gang likes to strip whenever possible. Do Sierra Clubbies follow suit(less)?

The Sierra Club is the biggest watermelon of all the envirocommies. Whatever they decide to publish is immediately adopted by the MSM and all other enviro groups. The Sierras have done all they can to ruin the state of Utah, with the help of that moron Clinton. They are past despicable. Defeat the Club by writing logical letters to the pols.

95% of Alaska's North Slope is already open for exploration or development. The Arctic Refuge coastal plain, the last 5%, should be protected for future generations, not plundered for a speculative short-term supply of oil.
I just know these losers are playing games with numbers and descriptions.
I just wish they would enclose photos of this beautiful last 5% they are talking about, and its wildlife.

96% of Alaska is closed to entry and claim. That is CLOSED, not open. The North Slope is about 90% closed, and on Federal land.

"The amount of oil under the Arctic Refuge...."

....is not known, because the enviro-whakos would not allow the tests necessary to make that assessment.

Therefore, any statements about a 6 month supply are a COMPLETE LIE!

Love the selective wording, e.g. "plundered."

More male bovine fecal effluvia from Club Sierra.
