They HAVE offered all the reasons why Miers should not be the nominee,

I do not believe that:

She's never been a judge.

She didn't attend a top tier law school.

She's not qualified! (using a list of imagined necessary qualifications)

She's "the cleaning lady!"

rise to the level of logical and substantive reasons. That is where you and I will continue to differ on this nomination.

I think you are correct about Mark Steyn; from the piece I read, I too would say he is neutral. I think he is reserving judgment, but I agree with you that he isn't fond of the pick. Thomas Sowell also goes in the neutral camp; I think his piece on the nomination is worth reading for anyone who has not yet seen it. He seems to see pragmatic reasons for the nomination, setting his opinion apart from a lot of other commentators.

Who needs 'em right? They're all a bunch of attention-seeking, crybabies.

Hugh Hewett sure is going to get a big increase in market share.

"Look, what the conservatives wanted was Armageddon, what Bush promissed was a conservative jurist. "

See, therein lies the problem. I think you got it exactly right that this is how Rove and others view it.

But see, let's get real. Who wanted Armageddon were the Senate Dems. What conservatives wanted was a solid conservative SCOTUS nominee.

There is a problem when an Administration is more worried about the criticism they will take from their opponents than following through with what is supposed to be a shared philosophy.

This same methodology of decision making (when the same dynamic has come up before) is why we have Bush signing McCain Feingold, why we have Bush not vetoing spending bills, why we have Bush promising to print money for Katrina, why we had the giant Prescription Drug plan. I won't throw immigration in there because I think Bush has long thought that conservatives who want to see illegal aliens kept out of the U.S.A. are racists - an entirely different reason to snub the base.

I've also had it with this "farce" from a group of conservatives and their attacks. There are alot of conservatives that do support the Meirs pick and/or at least to give her a chance before ripping her apart. First time I can remember where I get so angry I have to turn off Hannity or some other talk show host as they rip the nomination with Coulter or team.

Actually, no. The list of potential conservative SCOTUS nominees includes plenty of non-judge selections. But Bush Administration didn't want anyone who had voiced opinions on constitutional law.

If we have to follow that standard why not just be completely anti-elitist and go pick out the youngest checker at the Piggly Wiggly grocery store. Then we'd get a great, non-elitist, non-judge, non-constitutional scholar, young person who could serve on the court and make understands-real-life rulings for 80 years.

My God, the establishment of my own party is turning into the "let's dumb down the standards" Democrat Party. Ack!

I am a lawyer. I have been involved with the Federalist Society since I was in law school. I do not know a single lawyer who supports the Miers nomination, which is, in fact, an embarrassment.

Do you disagree that Bush has done a good job so far in his appointees to the Federal Bench?

That's a leadup to "trust me."

Actually, I believe Priscilla Owen was contacted and said she absolutely would have been interested and didn't ever tell the Administration she'd taken her name off the list. But to be honest, I read it online or heard it on talk radio, so take the source for what it's worth.

I am a conservative who disagrees with the knee jerk reaction against Miers. She hasn't said anything yet. Bush's record on judicial appointments has been stellar. I think he ought to be given the benefit of the doubt until I hear otherwise. With my own ears.

We are not a group of droids. Thomas Sowell is willing to hear Miers out, Scalia thinks a non-lawyer might be good for the court, President Bush has confidence in her, Fred Barnes hasn't joined the Choir Unanimous to defame her.

There are "workers in the field" who think she needs to be given a chance: James Dobson, Chuck Colson, Rick Warren. These men aren't mere wordsmiths...they are actively involved in the cause. And I saw an article earlier this week that said many of the 'grassroots' leaders at the county level of the Republican Party trust the President on his choices.

Count me among those conservatives who would love to "stick it" to the libs, but will be behind Bush on his judicial picks until he shows a habit of picking liberals. He hasn't, so he still has my trust.

Nor I for you

They are only saying what I believe and have voiced to my elected representatives.

Harriet Miers is not in my opinion, a conservative.

There is no evidence of it.

There used to be a sign hanging on the bulkhead of my last office. It said simply

"If you were accused of being a Marine, would there be enough evidence to convict you?"

I ask the same question of this nominee.

She would not be convicted in any court in this country of being a conservative if she were ever charged with it.

There just isn't any evidence.

That list I believe includes Fred Barnes, R Emmett Tyrell, William Rusher, Hugh Hewitt (he's more establishment Repub. then movement conservative, but still...), James Dobson (depending on which day of the week you ask him). David Limbaugh might even join this list - he's gone back and forth. Oh and Thomas Sowell.

If you're keeping a list (looks like you have a good handle on it) add Michael Reagan to that side of the balance.

"Ok, besides her opinion that GWB is the bestest president ever,"

LOL! I think it was "best governor ever", but still, compared to her published writings that remark at least had the virtue of clarity.

Sorry folks, Meirs is a hack, she can't write and it is TRUE, TRUE, TRUE that she is a crony nominee.

Sorry, but true. And I've been one of the biggest bush-bots ever, and this, this finger in my eye, is a bridge too far. Bush has stuned my beeber on this, on top of everything else, the border, hand-holding with the Saudis, LITERALLY, I'm done.

DEFEAT MEIRS!

That's nice. Personally, I consider the American legal profession an embarrassment. Lawyers and Judges have destroyed our constitution.

Of course I have it right, you just have to listen to me and do exactly as I say...:-)

Let's say Priscilla Owens was the nominee, most of us like her, right?

Ok the lefty Senators get that butts in a wringer and invoke the filibuster.

We need how many to invoke cloture??

At bes we might have 48-50 fairly dependable Senators though their spines come and go.

We cant depend on DeWine, Chaffee, Snowe, Specter or the rest of the squishy RINOS

So where does that leave us??

Dont you think that Bush aides talked to the senate before making a nomination??

If you want to blame anyone for this possible debacle you can look at Bill Frist and his pantywaist leadership. This aint Bushes fault hes playing the hand that he was dealt.
