I would say that in that poll roughly a third of Freepers oppose her, a third support her, and a third aren't sure. But the poll was put up fairly early in the game. I don't know how many people have changed their minds--certainly not the most vociferous among us, I'm afraid, but it may be that some of the quieter types have.

The support for Roberts was far more positive. A few people expressed doubts, but almost everyone came around in fairly short order. Nothing like this.

The whole business has been very unpleasant. I usually support Bush. I don't usually take extreme positions. I believe that politics is the art of the possible. I don't see any probable good outcome in opposing Miers, because I doubt that Bush will withdraw her no matter how bad it gets. But I am more and more convinced, regretably, that when he selected her he made a terrible mistake: a mistake for Bush, for the conservative cause, for the campaign to take back the Supreme Court, and even as a political tactic. It may have destroyed any hope of making any further conservative nominations to the courts. It may have undercut Bush's power to do anything constructive in his remaining three years in other areas, such as the War on Terror.

Because this appointment is so damaging, I have no choice but to speak out against it, in the faint hope that it will be reversed and that Bush will recover his political momentum.

Hell, 27 percent of Those Posing as Freepers hate Bush all the time.

I find that number interesting. That's really close to the percentage of people that hate Bush all the time in almost all polls.

Everything I've heard from and about Fr. Frank Pavone causes me to admire the man. Thank you for the link! Interesting that Priests for Life supports the Miers nomination, but NPLAC, which is formed, in third, by Priests for Life, does not.

It is not the president's role or responsibility to determine a bill constitutional.

"No matter how you dress it up, only 27 percent of you ON THIS FORUM, a highly right wing forum, say no."

Only 30.1% say YES. You misrepresented the poll, and now moved the bar.

Originally you said, "65 percent of the people on THIS forum, one of the MOST conservative on the web, want her either confirmed OR at least given a hearing."

You're down from a 30% lead to a 4% lead.

When you make stuff up and move the bar, expect to get caught.

SD, thought you'd appreciate this exchange. Follow it back up.

I'm also a great admirer of Father Pavone. I donate to Priests for Life, and I have heard him talk with great admiration.

I would only note that the endorsement of Miers is brief and apparently based on what the White House told him rather than on any direct knowledge about Miers. The statement was released on the first day, October 3. It is brief, and all it has to say about Miers is this:

"“Our prayers are with Harriet Miers this morning as she begins this important process. We trust the President’s judgment and his determination to fulfill his promises about the kind of Justices he wants to see on the Court."

In other words, like Gary Bauer, he was told by the White House that she was a good, strong pro-lifer, and he believed it. But Gary Bauer has since had second thoughts about the way he was used.

The statement is still up at the Priest's for Life website, so presumably it still stands. But I don't think it means much more than "We trust President Bush to do the right thing."

It is the President's perogitive to nominate the person of his choosing. It is the Senate's role to advise and consent. That's the process.

I suppose you could call your Senators.

I'm not making up stuff; fully 62 percent of the people on this forum either support the pick or are waiting to hear, quite different from the adamant 27 percent who won't hear of anything short of execution for her.

"I believe there's no chance a GOP senator would vote against Luttig. He is, quite simply, a respected and accomplished jurist. The Democrats would not have the votes to filibuster, either, not with Bill Nelson, et al, up for reelection."

So you're saying a nominee like Luttig would have gotten a straight up-or-down without a filibuster, AND there would be no (or few) Repubican defections? Remember, what looks
like a "quite simply, a respected and accomplished jurist" will look quite a bit different after the Dems and the MSM get to work on him. Not enought to affect OUR opinion, of course - I'd be ready to roll up my sleeves - but there are some weak-stomached Republican senators whom I flat out do not trust, i.e. Collins, Snowe, Voinovich. Too close for comfort...

Also, a vote to confirm to a lower court does not guarantee a vote to confirm to the SCOTUS.

Sorta gives you some perspestive when the Pew poll shows only 9% of conservatives against Ms. Miers..... Now they have a large number waiting for info and that number may change but at least they aren't screaming for her to be hanged until removed.....

On here many of the 27 %ers are not Republicans but will chase the lure of some 3rd party. They don't elect anyone to vote in the Senate or nominate a Judge period. But they can yell and scream...... as is their right.

I'm very sorry for what you are suffering. I pray that you will see the overarching compensation of Jesus in all that happens. Dear Lord Jesus Christ, King Over All, please give back to this dear FReeper even more than what this one has had to say goodbye to. Make it all better, as only You can, Our Redeemer and Friend. Amen.

"I'm not making up stuff; fully 62 percent of the people on this forum either support the pick or are waiting to hear"

That is NOT what you said originally -

"65 percent of the people on THIS forum, one of the MOST conservative on the web, want her either confirmed OR at least given a hearing."

Waiting to hear doesn't indicate how they will break. It also means they haven't decided FOR her yet, so lumping them with the YES votes is also dishonest.

Thanks for the prayer. We will be fine. Many are in much worse situations than we are. It's only physical damage which can and will be repaired. Time is the biggest requirement at this stage since so many are having the same type problems and only so many workers are available. Again your thoughts and prayers are very much appreciated.

Are you now too far gone to accept the fact that waiting to hear and given a hearing are the same thing?

Wipe that froth off your mouth, boy.
