Remarkable family. It amazes me that often it's multiple members from the same family who sacrifice to the benefit of all, while other family lines not only have no sense of duty (but for the occasional "black sheep"), but have contempt for those who do.

He got back in because he hasn't reached mandatory retirement age. If he was a new recruit with no previous training or experience, he wouldn't have been allowed back in.

He got to choose his unit because he's in the National Guard and went shopping for a job. National Guard units that are deploying but have empty slots in their table of authorization look for volunteers to fill empty slots. He volunteered.
