I told you on another thread, I didn't see anthing that would sink the Miers nomination, so far. Generally speaking, most conservatives wanted a known quantity chosen, like Luttig, Brown, Owens, McConnell, Jones or Wilkinson. That included me. Bush made a decision I didn't agree with. Having said that, there is no good reason to get all worked up over this. The decision has been made and its final. Some conservatives have decided that Bush's choice of Miers deserves the benefit of the doubt for now. Many conservative media pundits have voiced strong opposition to Miers. If you remove people from the equation that know Miers, politically, personally and professionally, you limit the extent of her support. She has never been a judge and therefore she has no paper trail of opinion. That's good and bad. She isn't known outside of Texas. Inside Texas she is well known and well respected by conservatives and rank and file Republicans.

Tom Pauken-perhaps the most outspoken, prominent conservative in the state of Texas-couldn't find one issue upon which he and Miers agreed during her tenure on the Dallas City Council.
They even had a debate about the necessity of restructuring the council-where members were not chosen by single district-after a civil rights lawsuit filed by the DOJ.
She reversed herself on nearly every major issue that came before the Dallas City Council during her tenure.
There's no escaping that.

I was referring to the damage Bork did to himself speaking out during his Senate hearing process back in the 1980`s, not in 2005.

Wasn't Tom Pauken the Texas satte GOP chairman?
If the choice is between opinions of Pauken and Bush, I'll take Bush on this one.

Your question is best asked of Bush. The quote is Weyrich's not mine. It is my understanding that Miers did not volunteer her candidacy for the position and she was surprised when chosen.

DYK. My support for PresBush doesn't extend to his liberal spending habits, ever expanding govt and ignoring immigration reform. With Bush I'm in the 60%-65% range of approval. That's eclipsed by my 85%-90% agreement with the policy, politics and rhetoric of PresReagan. I'll stick with my "Reagan Man" handle and you can stick your "Bush Man" remark, up your arse.

That is, if we take the "surprise" story at face value. I'm not sure what to take at face value that comes out of the Bush White House any more.

I'm sure that Miers can speak for herself on that subject. Perhaps she will be asked of that in the hearings. We should hold our powder and not speculate.

There is also the rather important consideration that this nation, and much of the world, is under attack by Islamo-Fascisim; that this threat and explicit warfare will go on for years; and that it is not exaggerating to state that millions of lives are at risk through, especially, biological-weapon terrorism (as through spread of a deliberately mutated Asian-flu virus).
We can not get bogged down in domestic politics to the extent of diverting our attention away from this life and death struggle.
President Bush is quite properly going with an eminently qualified SCOTUS Justice candidate who deserves, and should get, rapid confirmation - so that we will not be diverted from the danger from without that too many persons are naively underestimating or even blind to.

Bush has proven not to be a conservative. We tolerated all the other nonsense under the condition he fix the courts by appointing originalists to it. He broke his promise and any credibility he had about being a man of his word.Yep!
