You'll see how damn fast this notion gets 90% support if a terror attack releases a biological agent or if the biological agent comes to us naturally and quarantine is required.

Why? Didn't Posse Comitatus survive the flu epidemic of 1918? What are the troops going to do that local responsible citizens can't? Or do we now need central planning to do everything for us?

You can't be serious, Walsh. I don't know about your neck of the woods, but we've had emergency drills here for bio and nuke attacks.

I have never seen you agree with an article critical of Bush.

Sure did but this isn't 1918. The prediction stands.

That is the problem, the decisions of asking for guard from other states lies with Blanco.

Blanco waited till after the storm to ask for Guard help, not 2 or 3 days before the storm.

Blanco even after the storm refused Michigan's national guard help. Blanco refused rapid response firefighting teams that are stationed around the country.

The strategic military decisions should not be in the hands of someone like Blanco or any other politician.

This is really an ignorant statement. You need to do some studying and get a better understanding of the founding of this country. We have civilian oversight of the military for good reasons. Are you from south of the border?

The prediction stands.

So are you one of the 90% or one of the 10%?

Civilian leadership should have general oversight.

But like in Vietnam most everyone agrees that politicians were too involved with on the ground military decisions that should be left to the generals.

In Iraq the generals are the ones deciding logistical issues on where to send troops, when to send troops, what units to send.

Coordination is the military expertise.

Jeb Bush offered Blanco Florida National Guard troops days before the hurricane hit. She declined. She doesn't have one percent of the effeciency of the military in coordinating assets.

The founding fathers didn't want Blanco making on the ground military logistical decisions that should be left to the generals.

One of the reasons conservatives have a hard time getting political traction is that they eat their own.

Here's some full disclosure.

I can envision circumstances where deploying the US military in the continental United States would be a necessity to save American lives.

I believe we are one nation under God, not 50.

I belive in local autonomy more than probably 99% of people on this website.

I also believe that this suggestion should be debated nationally before the scenario actually occurs and laws, very narrowly defined, put in place to allow the CIC to deploy military assets in narrowly defined circumstances.

There you have it.

The CIC already has the laws in place to deploy troops in the event of an insurrection.

So throw Blanco out of office in disgrace, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

The lessons of history aren't any use if you only look at them selectively. If anything, the lessons of Rita are that centralization through FEMA has been a mistake. The idiots like Blanco expect to be taken care of while still retaining command. This is a common failing among those who reach leadership on the Peter Principle, not just in government either.

...I disagree with you. A general would never order local citizens guns be taken in a situation like New Orleans that the police did their....

Crap.

VERY SLIPPERY SLOPE

We've already seen what happens when you use the military to enforce civil morality laws. California tried using the military in the Campaign Against Marijuana Planting. We had military roadblocks, citizens assaulted by overeager weekend warriors and public outrage at the abuse of power that occured. It was a total disaster!

I think it's a great idea!
