In 1940 the illegitimacy rate among blacks was 19 per cent; today it is 70 per cent. Only 30 to 40 per cent of black men graduate from high school. That fact has prompted a bout of soul searching by middle-class blacks. Some have condemned what they see as self-perpetuating joblessness, poor education and a culture that worships crime. Others have appealed for more help, an increase in the affirmative action which has done apparently little to end black poverty.
Bush summed up the problem best when he talked about the "soft bigotry of low expectations."
One of the problems of freedom is responsibility. If you have equality you have no excuse for being a bum. Blacks got political equality, and simultaneously they adopted the programs which led to the high illegitimacy which functions as a reason for failure. It might be only human for some blacks to subconsciously sabbotage their own chances.

Blacks are chumps for the democrats. I really do not care about poor blacks because they are democrats, just like I don't care about alcoholics with a bottle of Mad Dog in their pocket.

People have to want to change first. Blacks have to honestly accept republican ideals. Alcoholics have to want to change.

Howard has worked tirelessly for a memorial to a Walton County lynching from 1946 when four local blacks were butchered by their white neighbours. It has earned him both praise and insult. 'There's some black people here right now who are still scared,' he declared.

Exactly.

And who has kept them scared? The Poverty Pimps and their white liberal masters.

When you are scared of being physically attacked, scared of being discriminated against, scared of being held back, scared of being used, scared that you will never make it no matter how hard you try, scared that opportunities will never be available, why even bother.

Those who break away from poverty and dismay do so because they leave that fear behind. They stand up for themselves and establish pride in their work, pride in their ability, pride in their accomplishments. When a man has things he can be proud of, fear of the unknown melts away as he moves forward.

The middle class in the black community often feels anger, pity, and frustration at the poor in the black community, but it is the poor who feel hatred towards those who have "left them behind". The poor are afraid and the middle class feel pride. Why? Because when King held the lamp showing them the trail out of the ghetto blazed by so many great blacks in history, the Poverty Pimps now stand by the trailhead and tell stories of disaster waiting around the bend.

The middle class has not betrayed the poor; the Poverty Pimps have betrayed the bold.

When poor blacks become successful, it means they've moved on. The ones left behind are there of their own free will. I don't feel even a speck of guilt over it. Grow up and take care of yourselves, people. Get your own darn selves out of the ghetto. I'm sick of your whining.

Stay in school, stay off drugs, and establish a husband and wife relationship in the family.

Stay in school, stay off drugs, and establish a husband and wife relationship in the family.

Good advice for anyone regardless of race.

Not the democrats, whatever their skin color.

Skin color is a poor indicator of the quality of the individual, I find it's use rather insulting.

Show me a democrat, and I'll show you a bum.

i agree completely with you. Low expectations in school hurt kids so much. They will usually accomplish exactly what you expect of them. If you don't expect much they won't do much.

Show me a democrat, and I'll show you a bum.

You paint with a very large brush.

I know several people, actually good friends, who are democrats, hard working, honest, good people. Many of them do not like the direction their party is heading, but still think republicans principles are not the answer

I may not agree with them politically, but being a democrat doesn't make you a bum.

Winding up being a bum is a character flaw not a political leaning.

Anybody who CAN get out of an abject shithole WILL get out.

This is true regardless of race.

Yet the racial line often seems starkly clear. Nowhere more so than in New Haven, Connecticut: home both to Yale University and one of America's poorest black communities. The border is well known and obvious. It is where Elm Street, lined with Oxbridge-style student cloisters, suddenly changes to Dixwell Avenue, main thoroughfare of the black ghetto.

And if affirmative action is great for the rest of America, why can't young Yalies open up their great school to the poor of their own community?

They were the only ethnic group brought to America involuntarily.

Wrong. African and Arab slave traders sold anyone they could as slaves, all around the world. There is a large settlement of Chinese that was brought here as "indentured servants". There were white slaves. Any many blacks in America are from ancestors who emigrated to our shores (see Barak Obama's parents). Of course, maybe there are no Nigerians in Atlanta anymore.

Still would like to know why Africans and black Americans have such a differing world view. They do not like each other for the most part.

People have to want to change first.

Good point. Maybe we need "Poor People Anonymous" and a 12-step system.

Interesting point.

I don't remember who it was, but a black journalist wrote about going back to the part of Africa he originally was from and he expected to be accepted as a black brother with open arms.

The Africans thought of him as a American, not black, not a brother, but a plain ole American.

It was a shock to him

I guess Africans don't get to listen to the American race pimps and be beguiled by them

"Tin foil or source?"Good question.Your correct that whites will be a minority in the not to distant future if present immigration(legal and illegal)trends continue. The new arrivals flooding into the US are primarily hispanic, who by the way have much higher birth rates than whites and blacks. Is it a "plot"or a plan too make whites a minority in the US?I don't know, but dems know for a fact that hispanics overwhelmingly vote democrat.

"What was most shocking was seeing a segment of society so totally incapable of doing anything for themselves, seeing grown men wholly dependent on the government to provide for their rescue."

Thank you. You have summed it up succinctly.

People with positive attitudes move forward. People with negative attitudes fall behind. It appear there need to be an attitude change in the poor black neighborhoods because.
they are not being left behind. They have given up.
They do not have the will or the strength to rise above poverty. And when government provides the sorryful means for them to barely survive, government is doing those people a disservice by propegating an attitude of failure and subservience.
We owe them nothing but opportunity and opportunity abounds if one has the initiative to go out and grab the opportunity. 70% illiteracy is not a road to success. It appear blacks had it a lot better when there was forced segregation it is sad to say. They had nobody to depend on except themselves for their means. Government has taken that incentive away and that is why those once bustling avenues of commerce in black neighborhoods are now dilapidated, boarded up examples of government dependency and hopelessness.
There will always be poor people. That is a fact of all society. But anyone with intelligence can prosper if education is obtained, drugs are left alone, and hope and vision are clear. Anyone in line for a handout has no sympathy from me.

Winding up being a bum is a character flaw not a political leaning.

Your political leaning is not part of your character?

Do you really believe that?

If someone believes they are owed a handout, that is their political leaning, and that affects their whole outlook on life, and yes their character.

If someone believes no one owes them anything and that you do not have a right to charity, it also has an effect on ones character.

Not one word on the dynamics of how the US government though social engineering programs has systematical destroyed black america.

"In 1940 the illegitimacy rate among blacks was 19 per cent; today it is 70 per cent. Only 30 to 40 per cent of black men graduate from high school. ..... Others have appealed for more help, an increase in the affirmative action which has done apparently little to end black poverty."

Anyone who believes that more affirmative action would help is a self-serving fool. You can't give productive jobs to people who can't read or write.
