Ah, the "we moderns know so much better now" argument...

I know your co-religionists are embarrassing you, murphE, but look at it this way: Catholic FReepers are no worse than Orthodox FReepers when it comes to this stuff.

Actually, Jerusalem was in Benjamin. All Israel became known as Jews (Yehudim) because every Jew is a living acknowledgement (from the verbal root heh-dalet-heh) of the existence of G-d.

I'm grateful for your stance, but you are a distinct minority among Catholics. Just take a look at what your co-religionists are saying on the subject.

Truth was not ever, nor will be ever decided by a majority vote.

Ok. If the Bible is literally true from cover to cover. Please explain how God was tired after the sixth day.
Not all truth is literal.

Why do you assume the Bible says that G-d was "tired" after six days? Is it because your Bible translation uses the word "rest" for the verb shavat (which merely means to cease from creative activity)? Similarly the verb noach (which means to rest as in to physically lie in a certain place) is also translated "rest" in English.

It's amazing how you anti-literalists are parading your ignorance.

Coward

Our old "friend" Patrick Henry (who usually is happy to defend Catholic and Orthodox chr*stianity) was afraid to show up this time because the actual document (if you read the article carefully) is addressing the Zionist position that arises from a literal interpretation of the Bible (Genesis was just thrown in to obfuscate things). PH hasn't got enough guts to play his hand on that issue.

In terms of Protestant fixation on the Bible? Bibliolatry is the correct term, I think.

Catholics are awful quick to throw that word around for people who bristle with righteous wrath when they are labelled "mariolators."

Face it Bubba, without the Catholic Church you wouldn't have a faith to belong to, whichever of the 30 zillion Protestant sects you belong to. You wouldn't have a Bible either to interpret according to your whims.

Actually, if chr*stianity hadn't screwed everything up, the world might have come to the Laws of Noah much earlier.

"Bubba," huh? Do you also use the words "cracker" and "redneck?"

I see. So 5 kids, one day, that give a gestation period of what? Four hours?

Actually it was almost instantaneous (like the old Bill Cosby comedy routine). The long gestation period we know today was part of the punishment for the sin (if you could read Hebrew you'd see where G-d told Eve he'd increase her "conception."

You don't like anything not governed by uniformitarian natural law, do you? Except your precious J*sus, of course.

You are frikkin insane.

Do you consider the classic Torah commentators to be "frikkin insane" too? Or did they just "not know any better back then?"

So bats are fowls?

The taxonomic classifications you are familiar with are arbitrary human constructions based on similarity of appearance (or closeness of descent for you evolutionists). So how does your question have anything to do with anything?

"And btw, why is it that Southern Baptist preachers are never shooting their mouths off and making fools of themselves like this?"

Obviously you haven't spent much time in the South. I'm not trying to insult Southern Baptists, but there are plenty of idiots who happen to be Southern Baptists and even Southern Baptist preachers, just like you would find in any other denomination. It is wrong to judge a religion or denomination because of the views of a few.

'Amein.

Black Elk and wideawake are the only two other literalist Catholics I know of on this forum (I don't know of any Eastern Orthodox FReeper who isn't a higher critic and/or evolutionist, so you're not in the basement yet). There are also sites like Living Tradition, the Kolbe Center, and the theotokos creation sites. Actually, there are a few more Catholic literalists but unfortunately many of them are raving anti-Semites who believe higher criticism was foisted onto the Church by the "satanic Talmudic Jewish-Freemasonic conspiracy" (I used to have friendly exchanges with Robert Sungenis before he went stark raving nuts on this issue).

Thank you for your position. Be strong, and may you be led into the fulness of G-d's Truth.

I was referring to the specific issue of denying the total inerrancy of Genesis. On that (and other) issues the leaders of the SBC are blessedly free of the nonsense spewed by the successors of the apostles in the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

"Actually, Jerusalem was in Benjamin."

Yes Jerusalem also called Jebus was assigned by Joshua to Benjamin. Saul the first king of Israel was from the tribe of Benjamin, as was Saul/Paul from the tribe of Benjamin. Benjamin and Judah made up the Southern Kingdom after the tribes split. Judah however was the designated "king" line the tribe along with Levi that Christ was to come through, as Christ would be the High Priest and the King of Kings.

Now the tribe of Levi was never given any inheritance as the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance.

" All Israel became known as Jews (Yehudim) because every Jew is a living acknowledgement (from the verbal root heh-dalet-heh) of the existence of G-d."

Those of the 10 tribes, Northern Kingdom, Israel, Ephraim, lost sheep of the House of Israel, most of which still do not know who they are do not fit with the Kingdom of Judah yet.

It is written that the two will not be rejoined until Christ Himself returns, and as was promised to Abraham his seed would number the stars of heaven and sands of the sea, no possible way for that number to fit in that tiny little piece of real estate, not in the flesh that is.

G-d dictated the Torah to Moses letter for letter, and Moses wrote it down.

So God dictated Moses' own death to him to write down?

This is the problem with people like you: you seem to think you have cornered the truth market, that there is just no way that your ideas couldn't be right. I used to be like that, too. Now I understand that it's possible that I don't understand everything. I search for truth instead of being satisfied with the notion that I already have it. My posts aren't attempts at being a smartass, as you call me. They are questions for which I recognize I have no answers.
