Great! More print media I won't support by reading. I don't care for stuffed-shirt elitists.

so we can't question him? when he gets up there and tells us this is the most qualified person he can find, we just have to accept it?

Is there anything more inappropriate than demanding to know her personal opinions on issues.

The law demands impartiality not 'feelings' about issues.

Yes, there are others who are superficially more qualified. But Bush doesn't want another Souter. If he can't find someone who is uncontroversial and more qualified he is going with a stealth candidate that he KNOWS will be a conservative.

What's wrong with that strategy? If I had to nominate someone for a position, and I had a bunch of unknowns as choices, and one person I knew would do a good job, why would I go with some person I didn't know?

Surrender -- on the one hand you defend the Republicans, and the other hand you say they can't be trusted to follow through for the president. But that's not the rationale the president gave. He said he knows Harriet's heart. President Bush and his people vetted John Roberts, who we all hope will be solid. He didn't say trust me. So, he followed the same course, except here -- where the argument is trust.

Only last year we got rid of our car with Bush/Quayle bumper stickers from 1992.

give Miers a few years of lunching with Ginsburg, Souter and Breyer everyday for 5 years - then talk to me.

Not superficially more qualified, demonstrably and substantively.

I can't stand all the "I'm DEPRESSED", "WE'RE DOOMED", "BUSH HAS SOLD US OUT" type of callers and FReepers.

no one? if we eliminate the people we both agree had no chance because they were too visible and controversial - Brown, Luttig, Owens, a few others - there's no one else?

suppose Stevens passes away tomorrow? who is the pick to replace him?

She will be vetted, if not by president, by others such as senators. If the president wants people to defend his nominee, he has to give them something to embrace. If trust is enough for you, that's fine. But it obviously isn't enough for many of his usual defenders.

actually, I would pose that hypothetical question to everyone here:

suppose Stevens passes away tomorrow? who is the pick to replace him?

if we are so quick to accept Miers because we can't think of who else it could have been, what would we do if Stevens passed away tomorrow?

so we can't question him?

Certainly you can question him. I question him all the time.

when he gets up there and tells us this is the most qualified person he can find, we just have to accept it?

No, you can call your Senator and lobby him to reject her nomination. I would hope you would have some valid reasons for doing that before you do. Like maybe we should listen to the hearings before we run her out of town on a rail.

I haven't made up my mind yet, I won't until I hear her in the hearings but when I do I'll let my Senators know what I think, just like always. Of course my Senators in Ct stopped responding to me many years ago. :-}
