The woman's resume has been carefully crafted, as far as it
goes. The gifts to Gore etc were setups. Actually her
political philosophy is right of Scalia.

To put out a candidate who would placate the "base", but not get confirmed is unwise.

To the contrary, one only need look to the confirmation battle over Robert Bork. His rejection went a long way toward energizing "the base" to get Republicans elected so they could support a Republican President in selecting conservative nominees.

What is unwise is appearing to capitulate when you were elected to defeat.

Furthermore, feminists don't care if they are forced into the open. They'll find some excuse to oppose Miers because of the President who nominated her.

I suspect it doesn't matter. Meir's real sin is she is W's pick and NOT the pick of the "Conservative" Establishment. No matter what comes out about Meir they will ride their error down in flames rather then admit they made a knee jerk error AGAIN like they started out doing with Roberts.
