Miers is a political toady, hangerson, opportunist or whatever. Nothing out front on her own in the political world.
One of her friends has described her as "ambitious". That's fine, but to what extent? Which has the upper hand in her character - her principles or her ambition? We simply do not know - and therein lies the problem. We simply don't know enough about her. She's not a known quantity. And we don't have enough information to suggest that she is more worthy of the post than the likes of Dinh, Luttig and Brown. I would be very surprised if she was.
Regards, Ivan
And I "recoil" from Pat.
Hey love him or hate him, Pat B is no dummy and it is my impression that he honestly loves his country.
And given that even a broken clock is right twice a day, its ok to agree with Pat.
"I entirely agree with you, and God help me, Pat Buchanan.
There was a chance to make a truly wonderful pick. We have little basis to believe Ms. Miers is this, apart from President Bush's own word on it. Sorry, that is not sufficient cause to pass over the likes of Viet Dinh and Janice Rogers Brown. "
My sentiments exactly. Here's praying another opportunity comes around the corner for the folks you have mentioned and others like them.
"Reshaping the Supreme Court is an issue that unites Republicans and conservatives."
D@mn right. Bush might very well be throwing away a perfect chance to undo what the liberals have done for the past 40 years.
I used to dream of the day when conservatives held the White House and both houses. Now that they have it, they're squandering it - Bigger government than under Clinton, bigger deficits, concession to the left on the federal government's role in Katrina, etc, etc, etc.
It might take a defeat in '06 to wake them up. The selection of Miers tells me that the wishes of conservatives aren't being considered.
My votes from this moment forth will go exclusively to the Libertarian party, no matter how close the national races might be.
I understand the principle there, but just think, if Clinton had thought he could get away with a non-judge who is a loyal ally, Webb Hubbell and Sid Blumenthal would be on the Supreme Court right now.
"My votes from this moment forth will go exclusively to the Libertarian party, no matter how close the national races might be."
Good thinking! Extremely good plan. Have a PRODUCTIVE day!
Pardoning people in the last week of his administration, would be my guess.
Well we will just have to hope for the best and pray she is a stealth conservative - like a negative version of Souter.
Thank you... I will!
It doesn't look like we're going to find out anything but name, rank, and serial number. Her White House dealings are privileged, and she doesn't have to tell anyone about her personal convictions.
No, I just mean basic competence. If she's incompetent to serve in this job, it'll show.
Face it folks: "Shrub" is a clone of his dud, "Read My Lips No New Taxes," old man! Harriet Miers is David Souter in drag...my only question is who is blame this time as Warren Rudman is out of office?
What does "ultra-conservative" mean? If it means that Meirs or any other judicial nominee will uphold the Constitution, then Meirs IS "ultra-conservative".
She is a great pick. Bush went outside the judiciary click. When he say's that Ms. Meirs holds his own philosophy you can believe that she does.
President Bush made an EXCELLENT choice.
I agree with some of what PB says in this article--but coming from him, it sounds pretty silly. It's not like he thinks W is a candidate for greatness regardless what W does with the Supremes.
I thought Sunnunu was the main person to blame on that deal.
