He is from Massachusetts, the Mormon part doesn't matter. LOL
Romney should be ruled out. Not because of his religion but because, like Gore, he won't be able to carry his home state.
In the last two Presidential Elections, Massachusetts led the nation in voting for the Liberal candidate.
I would love to see Bush/Coleman, or Allen/Coleman.
I, too, would want to know is position on policies and history on those issues. While religious tolerance is an ideal, it isn't always perfectly appliable.
What if he were a poligamist? scientologist? raelian?
What does his religion say about political issues and does he apply those views?
If he is an ardent follower and his religion dictated that, say, communism must prevail. I wouldn't vote for him.
If his religion said communism should prevail and he did not work toward that, then I also would not vote for him. For what other issues can we count on him to pursue if not his own faith? Some Democrats are wll known for this sort of thing. Kerry, etc.
Those two statements amount to the same thing. His faith is only a liability in the opinion of those on FR who declare that it is.
Do you really think the reason freepers don't like him is that he is a Mormon?
"Or, to put it in evangelical terms, it might be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for Mitt Romney to win the Republican nomination."
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I recall reading somewhere in the distant past that the Hebrew words for "camel" and "rope" are the same without the vowel sounds, and that this metaphor has long since been mistranslated and that mistaken translation, as bizarre as it sounds, has stuck!
Dan
That said, I have another take on this article. The author is trying to make the point that conservative Christians are religious bigots, who would disdain a candidate who agrees with them on political issues but who belongs to the wrong church. It is a hit piece on Christians.
Mitt is originally from Michigan.
I'm not sure why freepers don't like Mitt, I think he is a very strong candidate who would certainly be able to go toe to toe with Hillary in the Northeast and the Midwest, while also attracting the South. But hey, I'm no Karl Rove.
yeah, I thought the article made a couple slams on the Christian Right.
So, if it were Mitt Romney running against Hillary Clinton, which way would you and your friends vote?
Excerpted from National Review---
"Gov. Romney suggested that in the ongoing war, we ought to be investigating mosques that preach Islamic militancy and the young men who come to this country from rogue precincts of the Islamic world."
But he is elected official from Massachusetts.
The pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-gun Rust Belt will flee from a social liberal like Mitt. His views are toxic.
The case against--He is a Mormon.
Give it up, Pondscum88. Mormonism is a red herring. He's an empty suit flip-flopper who tries to talk brave.
You said it yourself, Mitt Romney supported gay civil unions before he opposed them. He's a non-starter.
There are a lot of Christians who were inspired to vote for Carter when he ran, so impressed were they with his outspoken "born again" Christianity. He was a deacon and a Sunday School teacher, and for a politician to be that open with his religious faith at the time was a novelty.
We've had many years since then to regret his presidency. He was not the worst president ever, but his was certainly a disappointing one, and his behavior in recent years has been obnoxious to the point of bizarre.
Reagan, on the other hand, who seldom if ever graced the inside of a church, is widely considered one of our best presidents, and we have come to see him as a very committed Christian, if not a committed church-goer.
So I think you and I are in agreement, whatever a man's stated religious convictions, I still want to know what his political philosophy is, I want to know how rooted he is in basic morality, and I want to know if he has the courage to carry out his policies under intense fire.

This doesn't help him either.
In my view, this is largely much ado about nothing. Mormons get elected to office where there are very few Mormons. The list is quite long. Romney will be well positioned if Giuliani and McCain don't run, or flame out, as the centrist candidate, and he is far more articulate than Allen or Brownbach etc. I should add that non evangelicals might be more comfortable with a business like Mormon who does not talk religion that an evangelical who does.
I will do the same every time I cast a vote.
Being a Christian is NOT a qualification, merely an enhancement.
ha--we'll see. In 08 when Mitt imposes evil Mormonism as the national religion, takes all our guns, and mandates Johnny has two Mommies as required reading!!!
