In real speak: Liberal democrats ran the show in N.O. and republicans ran the show in Texas. It's incompetence vs. competence. Period.
My response to AP: See tagline. Then GFY.
And the socialist author considers these people wealthy?
The poor blacks in NO did have access to vehicles. Mayor Nagin didn't use them!
It's obvious that the poverty homing device on Rita just didn't work properly. That'll have to be worked on. It worked on Katrins, so there's a baseline to correct the system from.
The disgronificator was malfunctioning.
Aha! So Katrina was the racist.
We'll get that baby fixed in time for the next one. Maybe it was the flux capacitor?
There seems to be a website for every occasion.
I've seen both Katrina and Rita evacs in Austin and it's hard to tell the difference.
We knew this was coming. Race and Class in not an aspect of Hurricanes but it seems the media is 'stuck on stupid' and stupidly believe the rest of us are as well.
Linking poverty and race is slander. Beyond that this article is mumbo jumbo. People making only $32,000/an can't have cars? Really?
Obviously Katrina is a racists hurricane and should be charged with a hate crime.
Having a car has more to do with location. The poorest family in the hills of West Virgina have some kind of vehicle. People in inner-cities may not.
Wealth has nothing to do with it. I have quite a few students in my class whose parents were unable to leave Houston becuse of the traffic jams and the gas shortage.
I agree many in an inner city might not have vehicles, but two points. One, I doubt many would consider New Orleans an inner city along the lines of a NYC or others with higher density populations. Secondly, I can't beleve all the cars we saw floating around after Katrina were unusable. The poor areas shown on TV in Texas had few remaining vehicles sitting there, which tells me they worked well enough to get the people out of there.
Yep, like the Texas colonel said when asked if Texas would be able to move over a million folks out of danger areas... "This ain't Lousiana." And that's what happened, despite a few traffic jams, everybody out and Houston streets deserted hours before the hurricane hit. It took Governor Blanco longer than all that just to make up her mind.
