Wonderful news regarding your mother-in-law. We certainly hope she is doing fine. Certainly you, your husband, and family are relieved.
Can this number be added to the links at the top o' the thread?

Yes, please add the link to the top of the thread. I've gathered a huge listing of hospital numbers and various web sites that have patients who were transported prior and after Rita hit.

If anyone needs more info, I'll be more than happy to give it out.

I just got a cell call from daybreakcoming! She and her family are fine, 200 miles from their home in Liberty County!

She doesn't know about her house yet -- she's going tomorrow -- but the sheriff has told them that they may be two to three weeks without power.

It had something to do with the Trinity River -- maybe they opened the flood gates at a lake and then couldn't get them closed??? But she is on a high elevation, a male and the half from the river; but she's worried about the trees around her house.

She's going to call back tomorrow night with an up to date on the scene report.

Yes the Trinty River has a dam and they believe it may have been damaged, to "find out" they will have to let a bunch of water out and they know it will cause some minor flooding down stream. It is either a "minor flood" to check the dam or "assume" it is ok to only have it lead to a MAJOR flood, because it WAS compromised and never checked.

Going to be a rough day for folks in the Liberty area.

At least we know she's safe. I'll take her off the list.

Our electricity here in Lufkin, Texas just came on about 1 hour ago. No one hurt. I had 8 people from Baytown, Texas come up with 6 dogs, 1 cat to comingle with our 3 dogs and 1 cat and 2 horses and 100 cows. Everything here fine except the roof of one of the barns and 2 huge doors on the big barn. Have about 50 trees down on the place. I'll be doing a little chain saw work over the next few weeks. (Anyone need any firewood?)

I stayed up all night when the storm came in. It hit fairly hard at 1:00 am and picked up in ferocity and by 5:00 we had sustained winds of 75 mph with gusts up to 110 (so I am told).

One of the most fascinating things about those hours, which I spent on the veranda and had a good view, was the transformers blowing out. When they blew, a beautiful azure blue color lit up the sky, not white like lightning, but a very beautiful blue. As it exploded and the blue light came, it was quickly followed by a "groaning" sound, as if it was winding down. Very interesting. I guess I could see 30 or 40 go out over a 3 hour period.

I watched lots of treees go down and several snap about half way up the tree. Sounded like a gun when the trees snapped.

Our guests included my brother, his wife, my sister, her husband, 2 nieces and nephews and a kennel of animals of various types. The freepers will be glad to know that they came locked and loaded with perhaps 30 firearms and several thousand rounds to go with what I have. I felt like I was underarmed compared to one of my nephews. We got reports of various lootings and robberies. My neighbor told me there were some gangbangers from out of town that were doing a few things. I told my neighbor if they came looking for food I would feed them, but if they were looking for trouble my place would be very dangerous for someone to try that.

Anyway, that is how it is in Lufin, Texas. Some, I dare say, most of the city has electricity. There are some more out in the country who do not. One of my friends, a lawyer who lives out on a farm is still without electricity. It got up to 100 degrees today.

I have not yet heard from Rosey from Lufkin.

Facinating story about the transformers. I can't even imagine what 110 mph winds must have been like.

Thanks. I am sooo glad to be home and sleep in my OWN bed. We had a blow-up mattress to sleep on, but it wasn't all that comfy. I probably slept a total of 4 hours since Friday, but I got home at 12:30 this afternoon and about 2 to 2:30 I went to bed and slept till 7. Not real good, but my sleeping habits are out of whack now. LOL I go back to work tonight, probably around 11 and work a 12 hour shift.

I think everyone should go out and buy Delbert McClintons album with the song "When Rita Leaves, Rita's Gone". If you study the lyrics to the song, Delberts "Rita" was as mean as our "Rita".

Hope you faired well and had no damage and this note finds you and yours well. Good Luck.

Jeff

What a vivid description of the hurricane and its results!

You must feel like Old Noah with all those animals.
