In the "Tremors" stories, one of the stages that the worms went through was call an "@ssblaster".
Yep, that's how they got in to the air to glide.

I think this is a symptom of their highly polluted atmosphere. I am not tripping out, there is so much soot in the air everyone has a mask on all the time in the large cites. There is massive amounts of hydrocarbons from industrial paint sources, even the little sweat shops give off a lot.
Ever see the movie "voyage to the bottom of the sea" and the upper atmosphere caught fire.
