That's my approach to "statehood" for DC -- give everything north of the Potomac to Maryland.

I'll bet that many Vermonters who supported Sanders in the past are having serious qualms about doing so this time.

Remember, his "district" goes from a normal Congressional district of perhaps a quater million people to the entire state. Therefore, he is courting people who have never voted for him.

Some weeks ago, there was a very intersting article here about how the parts fof the country were becoming more geographically polarized....the red states are getting redder, the blue bluer..we shall see..

"Can we simply cut Vermont free and give it to Canada?"

My sentiments also. Please, Vermont, go. And unlike with King Lincoln, we promise you can go in peace. Just go.

I wonder if that's true of red areas in blues states? Living in California, I'd like to see the red counties of Orange, Riverside, San Bernadino, San Diego, and the like, get redder.

California needs to be split in two, before the San Andreas does it for us..

No, his district already covered the entire state (Vermont only has one congressional district). Sanders faced 100% of Vermont voters last November and every two years prior to that all the way back to 1990.

"From what I understand, Dean has all but given this one to Sanders. The Dems will put up token opposition, at best."

It is not Dean's call to make. Any Vermont Democrat can choose to run in the Democrat primary, and Dean can't stop it.

That's what I used to think, but I now have a much, much better idea:

Fascinating proposal. You've done a lot of work in envisioning this realignment of residential DC and suburban counties in VA and MD. Nice job. Will probably never happen, but it's a sound proposal. I wonder if we'd need to add another state to make a symetrical star field in the US flag (52 states)? I would suggest splitting California, not between north and south, but length-wise, separating eastern from western California. Make western California all of the coastal counties, including the greater SF Bay Area, all the way down to LA. Make eastern California the interior counties, and including Orange and San Diego. In fact, let the eastern portion retain the name "California," and let the coastal region adopt the name "Utopia."

But That's my point. The Dems won't waste any national money if they think Sanders is going to win it anyway. I don't think I'm going out on too far of a limb to say that he'd vote with the Dims far more than the GOP.

True, but Vermont is a small state and Doug Racine already has very high name ID, so he might decide to run even if the DNC doesn't promise him a dime---Racine knows that, if he can get a few Republican votes together with some non-Socialist Democrat votes, he could get elected with 35%. But what I'm thinking is that if Racine can get 20% of the vote, Dubie can win with 40%.

I could go for that, so long as you put San Diego in "Utopia" and Sacramento in "California."

"What Republican could win a statewide race in Vermont?"

There's Governor Jim Douglas, Lieutenant Governor Brian Dubie, and state Auditor Randy Brock (who unseated an incumbent Democrat last year).

We should be paying attention to the US Rep Race Too. The only announced Republican isnt one at all. He is a Socialist that wants to impeach Bush, and is simply going to the Republican nomination as though it were cute.

Jim Douglas, but he's not running.

Realistically, I think we only win if the D's run a candidate too. We'll see if that happens.

Totally. I saw that comment. Cracked me up. It was amazing, because it was so true. But usually, the D's aren't stupid enough to say it outloud.

That's what Vermont gets for letting in all those New York and Massachusetts flatlanders.
