Good catch, Zip. I never made that connection..
Near the beginning of this media circus there was a thread here on FR that had a link to the DUmp. The dummies had set up a PAY-PAL account to keep the ditch squatter going. I saw and read a bit of it with my own eyes. Disgusting!
That would of course be in addition to the the moveon/Soros millions being thrown at her.
A few of us out here in N California were wondering if she was declaring income where appropriate with all the money coming in.
Apparently, a few people in her hometown turned her into the IRS and California Tax Board for investigation. Then she said that she was proud not pay taxes. Not really smart if she hasn't been.
It makes you wonder. I may have to google the official stance of the church.
You don't think Soros pulled the plug on this fiasco, do you?
Nothing she says does or stands for has been very smart, IMHO.
I hear she's also the president, secretary, treasurer, CEO and professor emeritus of the same organization.
One would think that the morons on those buses heading north would notice all the rescue vehicles and trucks full of aid heading south and realize that they are going the wrong direction, both literally and figuratively.
We are in agreement!
Kinda makes you wonder doesn't it??
First off all, the church leaders appear to be derelict in their duties with respect to the purpose of the church as it is presented in Scripture. One of the primary missions of the church is to nourish and edify the saints (Psa 86:11; Neh 8:2-6; Mt 28:19-20; Jn 4:23,24; Eph 4:11-16; Col 3:16; I Tim 4:13; II Tim 4:2), but in particular to assemble together in order to glorify and worship the Lord (Ps. 29:1,2; 95:6-7; 150; Rom. 1:21-24a; Eph. 5:19-21; Col 3:16; Heb 13:15,16), for prayer (Acts 2:42; Phil 4:6-8), fellowship (Gal 3:26-28; Col 3:16; I Tim 4:13; II Tim 2:15; Heb 10:25) and evangelism (II Tim 2:2; 4:5; Jude 3; Mt 28:19,20), caring for its own (I Tim 5), to do good work (Gal 6:10), and all this with the objective of producing holy Christians. What is holiness?
The word in the NT is translated out of the Greek Hagios (Strong's 40), i.e, to literally be set apart, sanctified, consecrated and stems from the common root hagnos (Strong's 53), chaste, pure. Its fundamental ideas being separation, consecration and devotion to God, and sharing God's purity and abstaining from earth's defilement (Lk 9:26; II Pt 1:18). In contrast to hieros (Strong's 2413) - having a mere ritual significance - hagios has a moral significance. The derivative verb hagiazo (Strong's 37), to render holy, separate from sin in general and in particular abstaining from fornication, hagiasmos (Strong's 38), the act of sanctification, or hagiosune (Strong's 42), the quality of sanctification. And from #39, we see the ultimate outgrowth of holiness, that of being set apart for God's purpose.
And what purpose is that? That is exemplified emminently in the Great Commission: to preach the Gospel to all nations (Mt 28:19,20), do the work of an evangalist (II Tim 4:5), and to do battle in defense of the faith with the adversary (Jude 3). Furthermore, although the local expression of the universal church (the assembly) lives in the world, they are remain apart from it. Contrast that with:
"Moffatt said the church long has made its facilities available to a range of organizations, such as the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, various environmental groups, musical groups, the Extended Table soup kitchen, and Alcoholics Anonymous."
"Moffatt said he regrets the churchs position, given the role churches have played in political issues such as the civil rights movement and opposition to the Vietnam War."
The primary focus of the church is to its head, Jesus Christ, and the members of the Body of Christ universal are to be devoted in glorifying Him, and to worship Him. I fail to see how political activism through the church either glorifies our Lord, or can be considered worship (Psa 50:23; Heb 13:15,16).
Throughout His ministry, Jesus placed emphasis on the lone individual. Nicodemus came alone by night, and Jesus talked with him (and the conversation was not about political change either). When Jesus met the woman at Jacob's Well, He spoke to her about personal morality. Zaccheus, the man in need of salvation, was counseled alone. The rich young ruler came running to Jesus and he was dealt with on an individual basis. Jesus ministered to the centurion (who had a servant that was dying), not as a soldier in the hated Roman army, but as another pathetic individual with a human need. Jesus listened to the cry of the individual. He was not a revolutionary trying to change the system, but a compassionate Saviour ministering to individual persons.
Those who preach the Gospel work personally on a man-to-man and family-to-family basis, and do not urge some far off government agency to do the work for them. Those who engage in political activism deal with the masses of men through the action of the state. But people in our society already are mere numbers, and when the church pursues political action rather than personal evangelism, it becomes just one more agency that depersonalizes people.
In Luke 10:33-37, the Good Samaritan was ,'moved with pity," and took the wounded man "to the inn." The Samaritan bound up the man's wounds; he didn't push for legislation to make the Jericho road safe for travel. Our Lord's whole teaching has to do with each person's relationship to God and to his neighbors, friends, family, and enemies. Christianity teaches a message of personal faith, personal charity, and personal purity, to bring the blessed hope of the Gospel of salvation to the lost, living in a dying world (not to attempt in establishing heaven on earth).
Moreover, that church is woefully ignorant concerning the government of the church (an autonomous, interdependent, non-organized leadership) having two offices: elder (bishop) and deacon.
"He said he approached the churchs pastor, Robert Sewell, and was given approval for the idea."
Pastor is a gift bestowed by the Spirit, is of unisexual nature, and not an office absolutely restricted to men in the assembly (see Eph 4:11 - no qualifications specified - contrasted to Acts 6:1-3). A singular explanation of the ofice of elder/bishop can be found in I Tim 3 & Titus 1:5. The function of this office is that of leader (Acts 20:17-28) Moreover ( Acts 14:23; Phil 1:1), every church had a plurality of elders.
The duties of the elders according to Scripture are to oversee the work (I Tim 3:1), the flock (Acts 20:28), guard the truth (Titus 1:9; II Tim 4:3,4), and rule by direction not dictation (I TIm 5:17).
The qualifications of elder/bishop is given in I Tim 3:1-7; II Tim 4:5; Titus 1:5-9, and are appointed (I Tim 4:14; Titus 1:5).
Deacons are to serve (Acts 6:1,2) in a general sense (Phil 1:1). They are to take care of the physical well-being of the assembly and is an office as high as (but subservient to) as elder/bishop (akin to Christ being equal to the Father, but voluntarily subservient to Him and the Spirit equal to - but just as voluntary as the Son - subservient to both Father and Son). Deacons also dispersed money for the church (Acts 11:30). Qualifications of deacon are spelled out in I Tim 3:8-13.
In addition to fullfilling the purpose of the church, it has been tasked prescribed rites of practice or ordinances: Baptism and the Lord's Supper.
Political organizations such as the League of Women Voters have held events there as well, although usually with pros and cons of issues being presented, he said. The church also has hosted meet-the-candidate events. Moffatt said he cant recall a political person giving a stand-alone speech there, but some have passed through for social hours..."Its kind of what we do; its our community outreach type of thing," [Moffat] said.
When the church sought political power in the past, it was always disastrous for the faith. During the Middle Ages, the political activism of the church was at its height. Bishops ruled as nobles, and the church had the power to humble kings, No one would contend that these were times for which the church should be proud. If a local congregation forces its will on a city council, or if a national church body is able to dominate a country - the church buys its power by selling its faith.
It sounds like most members of that church don't have a clue. I Jn 2:15-17; Lk 16:13; Mk 4:19; Jn 17:9-20; Rm 12:2
It was the First UNited Methodist Church of Glenwood Springs. Most of the parishinors were up in arms about it, as a local activist had made the arrangements w/o consulting them.

Let's not forget the man is a convicted felon, which means he was caught at least once.
Thanks, but Blue Ridge beat you to it in post #28. Maybe the parishioners were upset, but their leadership is red to the core. Time to bail out of that snake farm.
