After Andrew there were many people who refused to leave their homes for varying reasons. Most came down to the fact that they did not want what little they had left stolen.
Some would not leave because of the conditions in tent cities FEMA and the military set up for people to live in. While it was not a mini-New Orleans, it was still not the safest place to be.
Others did not leave because their homes sustained damage but was still "liveable", some stayed in homes without roofs for months afterwards.
The court I live on consists of 8 houses, of those two homes lost their entire roofs. My neighbors took in their fellow neighbors until repairs were made. In the immediate aftermath of Andrew, the neighborhood would pool resources, go into other areas of Florida to bring back supplies or went to donation centers for provisions that were impossible to find. My neighbors also set up a community watch where at all times, at least two armed people watched for looters etc entering into the street.
I understand not wanting to leave ones home. This is still the US and people do have a right, until the USSC takes more rights away, to protect and live in their homes.
What you talkin' 'bout, Willis?
"Houston is one of the last place I'd want to end up".
I am watching a Houston church service on the internet right now. There are plenty of guests there from NO. All of them being prayed over and help being given right now.
...God Bless Houston...God Bless 'em all!!
They're branching out.
Just so you know, even as people were coming into the Astrodome, there were people waiting to take them elsewhere. They were logged in and logged out - thousands of people, all across Texas, are taking people into their homes. There is one man here in Houston that has taken 50 people into his own home.
You said you don't like the South - well, the South is a better place without people like you living here.
I didn't suggest they'd be better off dead. I'd rather be dead .
I contributed what I could for those people. I got other people to contribute. I've agonized for those people. I guess that doesn't count becaue I don't want to go to a relocation center if there is anything in this world I can do to avoid it.
Newsflash. These people aren't just going to big cities. They are going all over. My town, with a population of approximately 55,000, has taken hundreds. Our hotels are full. We got 2 bus loads from Houston last night. They are going to a shelter which will house 300. People are opening their hearts and their homes and their wallets. What are you doing, just out of curiosity?
I am personally putting you in charge of the "do not admit" list........... ;^)
Yes. And shut down the bar that opened for business in the French Quarter. NOLA and State officials have issued a formal mandatory evacuation order. They need to enforce it.
I was surprised Campbell Brown actually asked Mayor Nagin if bore at least some of the responsibility for this "refugee" chaos because he didn't do more to evacuate New Orleans residents before the hurrican hit.
I live within spittin' distance of the Swinging Door........ok, not spittin' distance, but driving distance
you said something that some considered an offensive putdown of their city, a city that has gone above and beyond to extend a helping hand to their neighbor citizens. stop being defensive. i am not a texan and it sounded like a putdown to me.
They need more ice (both cubed and crushed) on Bourbon Street.
I told you I am prone to heat stroke and would die within a day or two if the air conditioning went out due to a power outage. I have nothing against Texas. I have nothing against southerners. I would have loved to see the bluebonnets bloom in the spring. I would have once loved to visit New Orleans, dreamed of it.
I'm not anything at all like you are making me out to be. You are clueless. I said on another thread if my health were better, I'd take people and pets in.
And I could be a contributor to the southern economy, not a taker.
I gave money which two members of my family desperately need to survive where we are. Does that count? I'll juggle things around. I paid for my daughter's seizure medication. Does that count? I paid for my granddaughter's slashed tires and finally a fourth one that blew (she paid me back for that one). Does that count?
I won't tell you all the things I have done to help people and simple little acts of kindness in the past.
If it was taken as a putdown, I apologize. I wish we had some of those nice people up here. I am unable to go there and don't like big cities.
It is my constitutional right to defend myself. Even on FR.
Those very people aren't complaining about being in the Astrodome, or in a Fire House, or a High School or College Gym. They certainly aren't complaining about the churches or the families who have taken them in and fed and clothed them. Considering the old Projects that many of these people have been living in, they won't mind living on a Cruise Ship for 6 months. They are grateful for whatever comfort they have. Living in a "war zone" for 4 or 5 days tends to make you see life a little differently.
My hope is that you can continue to be pampered so you can sit and bitch about the efforts of those who are able to do for others.
You poor dear!
