From the satellite loop
here, it seems as though the winds from trop strength to Hurricane force could start in an hour or two.

I just went and filled up my truck. I still had a quarter of a tank, but there's not the slightest doubt that prices will increase this week.
And depending on the damage to the LOOPS offshore oil terminal, we may actually have to use SPR for its rightful purpose.

I could not agree more....These folks lost their opportunity as they were no given notice nor were they re-accomodated. While they may be bankrupt...Why wasn't some sort of consideration given to fund this possibility via FEMA or another organization.
The airlines could have had chance to do the right thing. They should have banded together for a change to come up with a way out for those folks that are not stranded in an unsafe situation.
I have seen more common sense ideas on Free Republic that really should be looked at in the future.
The school buses for example. Why risk the destruction of them...Why weren't they used to bus folks out?
Elections platforms will be all about safety next go around, lets hope people remember...

"Steady state Annular Hurricane" CNN is now calling her a Once in 500 YR storm.
Oh no--please, no.

New Orleans is exactly at 90.0 longitude?
FNC just had an animation of the current projected track as it comes ashore. Its comes in east of NO, but its close.

I believe there are numerous documented cases of dam-building inducing earthquakes via water mass and fault lubrication. Both factors ought to be expected in the aftermath of a hurricane. Not to say that the effect is statistically strong , as in hurricane = earthquake, but certainly physically plausible under the right circumstances.

Thanks for the reminder. Good idea to tank up now.

No, can't help you there...I have the free version. Maybe there are more areas with better resolution. The area I live is really bad resolution on the version I have.

*Shudder* they are now call Katrina a "Steady state Annular Hurricane"
Basically what this means is that unless something interacts with the storm or the eye begins contracting, she will maintain her current intensity and there will be no furthur eyewall replacements. IOW, all indicators are she is coming in at her present strength and there is almost nothing to stop that.
Even scarier, she is now over the coldest water she will encounter, the water temps only get higher as she approaches the coast.
CNN is now calling her a Once in 500 YR storm.
Weeping for my home of so many years. All my relatives got out, but will they have anything to come home to?

That is too unbelievable. How stupid can people be. FNC was showing some people on jetskis off the Alabama beach a little bit ago. There are no words for that kind of stupidity.
