FWIW: On the Michael Medved show (AM 1170 in San Diego), the day after Roberts was announced as GWB's pick, MM related a conversation he'd had the previous night with Sandy Berger. They were both at Stanford University to debate, and the news about Roberts came through just before they went on. Berger heard the name and said "My God, he and I were partners at H & H" (law firm).

He told Medved that Roberts possesses a brilliant mind: "whatever meeting he was in, he was always the smartest guy in the room." But was also rather a humble man, with a lot of personal charm, and was a very decent person. Berger said everyone liked him.

"Is he conservative?" asked Medved. "Oh, very conservative" said Berger, "he would vote to overturn Roe vs. Wade". Berger further said (not happily :) that he expected there would be some resistance, but Roberts was pretty much a lock to be confirmed

So said Sandy Berger

I really get upset with all you dumbniks who say that Roberts is not pro-life. He and his wife adopted two children. Proaborts don't do that.

And his wife works (worked) for a pro-life organization.

WASHINGTON (AP) - As a young lawyer in the Reagan White House, Supreme Court nominee John Roberts concluded that a group's memorial service for aborted fetuses was "an entirely appropriate means of calling attention to the abortion tragedy."

Roberts' wrote the advice in an October, 1985 memo after he was asked to review a proposed telegram from President Reagan to the memorial service promoted by the California Pro Life Medical Association.

"The president's position is that the fetuses were human beings, or at least cannot be proven not to have been, and accordingly a memorial service would seem an entirely appropriate means of calling attention to the abortion tragedy," wrote Roberts.

Roberts is not a RINO but Bush picked someone with a paper trail that is hard to critize.

In other words, his record is vague. How, then, do you know that he's "not a RINO"? The fact that he adopted two children proves nothing. Even if he is pro-life in terms of his personal opinions, that in no way indicates that he'd be inclined to go against precedent. And right now, SCOTUS precedent on the subject of abortion leaves extremely little wiggle room.

strict constructionist (won't legislate from the bench).

Calhoun was a strict constructionist. This guy is no Calhoun.
