This is what I love about the marines.
Adapt and overcome.

Donkey riding, donkey riding

The animal in your photo looks like a small mule. The slender head and short (for a donkey) ears indicate "mule" to this old mule skinner.
An intertesting combat story on mules: there were several instances during the Korean War where US troops captured mules being used by the NKs and Chineese. When these mules were inspected, they were found to have US Army tatoos. They were mules that the US had sent to China during WWII!
Standjng orders at the time was to NOT use mules for US supply duties in Korea, somehow the front line guys "forgot" that order, and the former US mules were put back in service.

...determination to try to mate when untied frustrated the marines.
Send in the Marines. It takes that kind of steely determination to deal with donkeys.
This is a great little story about our remote troops in the Afghan hills. We don't seen enough stories these days on our troops there and the progress we've made.

That's what I thought too. My grandfather loved (and hated) mules. He kept them around for a long time.
In this high-tech era, who would have predicted a return to patrolling with pack animals?
Great story about those double-agent mules in Korea.

This is not a joking matter. Not joking here. And I wasn't looking for a history lecture. Merely pointing out the incongruity of the satellite dish on the house in the background.

I have seen Tents over there with a dish. just a bunch of goats and a dish on a tent pole.
Sounds like my Air Guard unit in the field. Minus the goats of course, LOL! Everywhere we go we take our DirecTv dish.

I saw a show on the Discover Channel about the MWTC quite a while back. It had a little bit about the mules. Interesting.
