I completely agree, and these numbers you post are better economy than the hybrids.

The Rabbit diesel VW is the only viable small diesel engine in the world, and only diesel is truly serious alternative.

It's true. It's always calculated risks. SUVs are a smart buy, imo, despite high gas prices, especialy if you put it through its paces.

A SUV is much more efficient at carrying large amounts of loads from one place to the other as you do not have to make another trip. This is why the Boeing747 is still the most efficient airplane on the planet, no matter the technology out there. Bigger is better if you can employ it practicaly.

It's all numerators and denominators.

However the zero tolerance f@g police along with stupid marketing will recklessly forbid an owner's own risk calculations.

No tiny death traps for me and my family. I don't care HOW many miles per gallon they get.

Amen to that. It isn't worth driving a pop can to save $1500 a year. I know three people who are in constant pain from accidents decades ago. They'd gladly go back and pay $1500 a year to get rid of the scars and pain.
