[What I want to know is why, when Americans have been sending conservative reps to DC for nearly a decade now, it isn't viewed as Mainstream]

There are probably two (or more) answers to that in my opinion.  First, perceptions are a function of the media and the media has been successful in painting the majority as extremists. Secondly, a huge percentage of America is in the middle, and it is this middle that chooses candidates with the primary system.

Also, a lot depends on how you define conservative.  Iran is under the control of conservatives, yet I don't think we have a single politician in power that can be lumped with that group of lunatics.

Most of us freepers are much more conservative than the average Republican. Take the abortion issue as an example. All polls indicate that American are in favor of Roe v Wade, so it must include a significant portion of the GOP. I'm a businessman and most if not all of my associates are Republicans, but I wouldn't describe too many of them as thoroughbred conservatives.

"If they could articulate, Bush's poll numbers would be way up."

Just being eloquent at explaining why government is getting larger and more oppressive and more socialistic will not impress anyone who is conservative.

"Huh under GW Bush the Pubbies have gained seats."
the problem with that is that so many of them are liberals.

What have the Republicans done since 2001 to restrain the government....even incrementally?

...and people like you who wish to pit conservative against conservative are nancy pelosi's bestest friend

If I recall it's you who posted the distortions of Ronald Reagan.
But you have stoked my curiosity. Who is the "conservative" you're implying that I'm pitting RR against?
