"These lovable breeds can and sometimes do kill. If YOUR dog kills YOU should be subject to the death penalty or life in prison. If your personality is not strong enough to control one of these breeds DON'T get one. Breeders you know better!"

Bingo! Spot on!

Sounds like you would also agitate for the legal destruction of my former pet, a 140 lb pure bred German Shepherd.
Big Scary Dog. Never bit anyone.
Capable of perpetuating mayhem.
Less so than I was, and am, but still "dangerous".
As I am still, if provoked.
After you get rid of the dogs, what will you do about the humans?

OK, I guess we misunderstood each other. I was going overboard to make a point. Dogs that are regularly let loose by their owners are a threat to children and passers-by. The dog that seems to be a non-threat at that MOMENT you see it, is the same dog that might run up on some kid or grandma walking down the street. First option should be calling dog catcher or whatever, but that requires monitoring the dog. Not everyone is comfortable with that.

Someone related to me the story of a neighbor's dog who had attacked people before. His sister lost part of her finger or something like that in one attack, but every time this happens the dog is sent off with a relative and when it shows up cops don't do anything(why they don't INVESTIGATE, I don't know.) Then later when you encounter the owners walking their filthy animal down the street they smirk at their neighbors. Apparently, they are confident in their ability to get away with it.

The solution to such people is

1) Kill the dog as soon as possible. It has attacked before and will attack again, esp with such owners

2) If the owner does not take immediate action to stop an attack and they are at the scene--shoot them. They are as responsible for the attack as the dog is, in such cases.

Oh yeah, it was a pit bull. What a shock.

Big dog lover, here. Big animal lover, I guess. But I hope I don't allow that to influence me in a case like this. Still, I almost always blame the owner or the breeder.

I suppose there are exceptions. Can dogs be insane, lol? Surely they can have brain damage despite the best breeding. So, if a dog is vicious and uncontrollable, then perhaps he should be euthanized. It would be hard to object to that. But I sure hate to see people calling for the elimination of an entire breed, especially one that is as well-established as the Rott and the Pit Bull.

The dogs should be calling for the elimination of the irresponsible human breed!

Ban all Rotenwillers and pitt pulls. How many times do we have to read about such tragedy before people realize they are no more suited to a neighborhood than and mountain lion as a pet.

My friend's Rotty is a big baby. This dog reacted for a reason. My guess it was beaten with the hose and freaked when he saw it. People make these dogs mean.

You ignore nature. All dogs have dominant traits. Rots and Pitts are born with an aggressive trait. A border collie heards sheep, a lab loves water. Rots and Pittbulls should be banned in all neighborhoods.

Rottweiler species should be exterminated off the face of the earth.

Worth repeating.

Let's just exterminate every species that has ever harmed anything else ever.

Sounds like you want to take someone's reasonable position and take it to the extreme in support of your point - and your three month old time bomb of a dog.

A friend of mine is in bankruptcy right now because his cute little Rot bit a kid and left a scar on her face. He said, I used to think that dog could never hurt anyone. He was gentle with the dog and had it since it was a pup.

He could not believe how it turned on the girl and for no good reason. It was like a transformation from loving dog into a deamon. He said he was a fool.

If you have children around that dog or in your neighborhood, keep in on a sturdy leash at all times.

You are awfully, awfully defensive of rottweilers.

Makes me wonder why...

Okay, I've rethought the statement.

If I mounted a pair of chainsaws on the front of an SUV and then drove around a neighborhood trying to cut the neighborhood kids into pieces, they'd be safer than if a 150 lbs. rottweiler got loose in the neighborhood.

Here's why.

My two year old knows enough to stay away from the chainsaw wielding SUV, but to him, the rottweiler is a big doggy, which is roughly the same size as the baby cow at the petting zoo nearby. Same with my 3 and 4 year old.

If the dog runs loose in the neighborhood and decides to lay down on my lawn in the heat, my kids will walk right up to it.

What are the chances that dog will get loose? I don't know, are they better than the chances that it will rip some baby from a mother's arms and tear it to pieces? Who wants to bet? Who wants to wager their kids life on that bet?

Chain it down with something sturdy in your backyard or put it down is what I say. And I'll go further.

If I did find that dog on my lawn, which course of action is most likely to safeguard my kids.

1) Kill it dead.
2) Call animal control, who will contain the stray pup, return it to the moron that let the gorilla escape from its cage so that it can get away again.
3) Call 911 and wait the 20 minutes for the cops to get there so that they can call animal control. They won't site the owner for at least negligence and at worst reckless endangerment.
4) Let it walk away so that it can maim or kill somebody elses kids.

Pit bulls and rottweilers deserve to go to the same zoos we send lions and tigers.

If you read through, you'd find that I hve supplied military, guide dogs, rescue and police dogs throughout my life.

A lot of lives have been saved or vastly improved by my rotties.

You and your pals are a bunch of hysterical clowns.

Until then, find someone with a brain to write your next post.

Wow, personal insults.. how very, um, ... oh nevermind.

My point is, people aren't generally hurt by guns that are owned by responsible people. People that know how to use them, secure them, keep them away from people that don't need to have access to them, etc.

Same with these dogs. People who understand RESPONSIBLE dog ownership and know the damage that these dogs can do and properly train these dogs, don't generally have dogs that hurt people.

Yes, the dog "made the decision" to attack and the dog that attacked needs to be destroyed, the owner held responsible.

I don't think you can blame every dog of that breed, just as you can't blame every person of a particular race based on the actions of some.

Please refrain from your personal attacks. It makes you appear like you belong on DU.

"Last time I checked there wasn't a single gun on earth that could determine on its own to attack and kill someone without the manipulation of a person."

You are correct. However, almost every gun accident is the result of some kind of neglect or lack of training. Sadly, the same is true with dog bites. Dog owners are held responsible just as irresponsible drivers, compact cars (strap your kid in a Geo and he is in more danger than being in a room full of rottweilers) or swimming pool owners, both of which cause many, many, many more deaths than dog bites in every community (about 50 deaths from drowning in Tucson over the last 10 years...dog bite deaths in tucson...never heard of any). A lot of folks are uncomfortable owning guns so they own a GSD or rott for personal protection (a scary concept to you perhaps). Too bad there are no statistics readily available on how many crimes have been deterred or deaths avoided.

Before accusing others of turning off their brains I strongly suggest you take personal inventory of any areas in your own life which could be potential safety hazards...maybe you use a fork in the toaster...drink pepsi next to the computer...leave water boiling on the stove....take an occasional sip of wine (you might become an alcholic!) ...own a swimming pool (fill it in pronto)....ride a bike etc. Good luck.

Scary picture. Imagine the scene...Pomerania circa 1400. A low dust cloud on the horizon. The distant drumming of thousands of tiny paws then the yips and yaps of the advancing herd. Then the begging starts..the peasant farmers are reduced to near starvation. Entire villages are enveloped with great rolling bales of shedding fur...Come to think of it, I've never seen a person who claims to be from Pomerania...

OOOOOOH MY SPLEEEEN.... LOL

Yes. This makes me hysterical, wondering why you are very defensive.

Excuse me, but it shows me that you are even more defensive than before.
