This isn't too far from me, so I actually called down there just now. They offered the things to graduating seniors first, and these are the ones left over after that. They're being sold strictly as-is - they all boot, but after 4 years in the hands of students, you can expect some scuffs and dents here and there.
Anyway, the deal is, there's a limit of one per person, so no snapping up a dozen for resale on eBay :(
That's why no one is buying them.
There's going to be a whole lot of ebay sales out of this and for more than $50 I'd imagine.
The new ones are rated 12 hours according to the link above.
My wife saw something about this this morning, and since we live in Richmond, she's going to head down there and check it out.
We're dedicated Windoze users, never used a Mac before, but hey, a reasonable laptop for $50 even if it's outdated? I'll take it and see if I can slap Open Office 1.1 on it (I use OO on my Wintel box), so we can do spreadsheet work at craft shows out on the road.
Did these things come with Ethernet capability? If so, is there a way to get it to hook onto a network with two Windows computers (with a minimum of hassle--I'm kind of a networking idiot) and transfer files back and forth?

Dell gains here, Apple gains elsewhere, and so it goes.
Broward County Florida schools to get 30,000 iBooks
9:32am, Jul 27 - By Dennis Sellers
Apple will supply 30,000 new iBook G4s to Broward County Public Schools in the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, area for use by all of its students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
"We're excited to work with Broward County to provide students with the best learning tools available," said Tim Cook, Apple's executive vice president of Worldwide Sales and Operations., in a press release. "Thousands of schools across the country have improved academic achievement with the help of Apple's education solutions, and the addition of 30,000 iBooks will do much to help provide students with necessary 21st century skills."
Yesterday Apple updated the iBook with Power PC G4 processors running up to 1.42 GHz, 512MB memory across the line, better graphics cards and built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. They also sport the two patent-pending Apple technologies rolled out with the last incarnation of the PowerBook: the scrolling TrackPad and the Sudden Motion Sensor.
"As one of the nation's leading school districts, Broward County Public Schools has long used technology to enhance teaching and learning," said Dr. Frank Till, superintendent of Broward County Public Schools. "The new iBooks are ideally suited to meet the needs of our students, and demonstrate Apple's commitment to education."
Yes.
They come with built-in ethernet and a wireless card, apparently. Shouldn't be too difficult to get it talking to your Windows machines, but one of the Macheads can tell you for sure, or maybe walk you through it.
I'm with you. Any Freeper in the area of the sale FReepmail me as well and I'll send you the 50 bucks...and any shipping and handling....and a few bucks for your time.
Can't beat a 50 dollar Apple laptop....even if it is used.
Hey Ill be willing to do that also.
After they cook few thousand Dell mother boards at $200 a pop the school board will be begging for Mac to come back.
Not to mention the cash they could generate selling the ibooks on ebay.
I'll send you $100+ for two! Freepmail me! :D
Does anyone have a fair idea of the actual chance of getting there and being able to acquire one of these little guys? If it'd be a decent chance, I'd drive up from Savannah. Anyone along I-95 want to catch a ride?
As long as the story has been online, here at FR, Diggnation, etc....you'd best get there a day early and stake out some space in line.
I hope anyone planning to head there got the latest information regarding the new residency requirements:

Unless a lot of software is included, that will eat up the difference real quick!
