Sumtin in memory says that was because sum spanish blood got up/over there.....
Southern Highlander ping
I was going to recommend Albion's Seed also.
Was it The Cousin's War?
The author of this piece was NOT Webb, it was Charles Oliver. Oliver wrote this article to critique Webb's book, Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America. Oliver made the comment about meth, not Webb.
So, where would a Quigley be found in Ireland? Where could he call home turf?
Reports of our death has been exaggerated
"the darker Irish" "Sumtin in memory says that was because sum spanish blood got up/over there....."
Yes, that is one theory. And it was in the Northern part of Ireland (Ulster)where the huge Spanish Armada was laid waist buy the storm. So if many sailors made it to shore as the story goes it could account for the darker Irish. But wait a minute - These guys were Latin, maybe just one or to Spanish sailors making it to shore would of been enough.
The Orange Order didn't start till the early 1800's a good bit after most of the Scots-Irish already emigrated to America.
Interesting you thing you say about surname Moore. It's one of those names that can be either English or Irish. Irish Moores (O'Moore) are of the orginal Celtic stock.
That whole Spanish Armada thing is a whole load of exaggerated crap. The majority of the Armada who crashed off the Irish coast were killed and those who survived made their way back to Spain...not mix and marry with the native Irish. The Spanish comes in more with pre-Reformation Galway which had strong commercial connections with Spain. The whole thing about "black Irish" being descended from the Armada is a fallacy. They're descended from the pre-Celtic inhabitants who did make their way from Spain centuries before Christ (the Milesians)or the Firbolg. It reminds me of the story of when you see a supposed relic of the True Cross----if you put all the relics of the true cross together, you could probably rebuild the Spanish Armada.
Do you have any links or references? They had a common enemy, the English, and both were Roman Catholic.
Thanks for the historical post on Confederate General Cleburne, archy.
There's quite a few Quigley's up round Derry and Inishowen, in fact on the road from Derry along Lough Foyle you will come across the small town of Quigley's Point.
I had my heart broken when I was 17 by a girl called Quigley, funny she looked Spanish, but it is true to say if you put all the so-called dependents of the Spanish Armada in Ireland together you could populate Madrid.

Wasn't me. I'm a 50 year old man.
Just another Yankee that hates the South. I deal with this scum everyday and the real reason behind the hate is their absolute fear of Southerners.
Charles Oliver can kiss my Scotch-Irish butt.
