It seems possible, for example, that Soviet designers balanced on the threshold, using only just enough plutonium to achieve critical mass and relied on tritium to generate required yield. In that case, even modest degradation of tritium could have resulted in a significant drop of yield. Thus, it would be safe to assume that without proper maintenance, portable nuclear devices might still produce chain reaction, but yield would be minimal, and with time, possibly non-existent.How difficult would it be for al-Qaeda to get tritium into the country? Its radiation is only beta, so they could shield it from detection, right?

The point is there are endless possibilities.
I can come up with dozens of scenarios myself, all possibilities.
But what's the point? Scare people?

how many stories like this have appeared since 9-12/2--1?
To: atlanta67
Have there been quite a number of such reports? Maybe that should suggest something.

one of the biggest inconsistencies of the story, is how Nukes are already here along with 1000s of Al Qaeda ready use them, then he gives a plug to the minute men and the need to militarize the border. If the story is true, I'd say the minute men are a bit too late.

""I want to be wrong here.""
you are.

If the story is true, I'd say the minute men are a bit too late. Not at all. If we get the border secured, we can then work on deporting the shady characters who are already here. But it would be kinda pointless to deport them if they can just sneak back in at will.

None. One thing we've learned from the end of the Codl War was the USSR wasnt very competent.

why it ist as though youd have 15 minutes warning
To: atlanta67
They were competent finding sympathizers and planting agents at very high levels of government. That's how they got nuclear technology in the first place.

Missing the point. The real threat is swarms of highly trained killer bees. Do the research - its all out there.

people liek this guy need to disappear in the night. It is high time we employed the tactics of Pinochet and Galteri
To: inquest
my point is defending the border is a bit late if Nukes and cells are already here

Even I don't believe this one. Sorry.

(The Preamble to the Bill of Rights - without it, our Bill of Rights is meaningless!)
To: DB
You're right. There are many ways terrorists can strike and Farah's report is just one method. People should be scared. They should be scared enough to be alert so they don't forget we are at war and to report any suspicious activities. People can be scared without panicking. The victims of the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania didn't panic. The passengers knew they were going to die and yet they kept their wits enough to devise a plan to rush the terrorists. Thereby preventing the terrorists from crashing the plane into the U.S. capital and saving many more lives. I don't know a better example of staying cool under pressure.
There are two ways to look at what might happen:
1. We assume the terrorists will attack and prepare accordingly. If we are wrong the worst case scenario is nobody is killed or injured.
2. We assume the terrorists won't attack and therefore do nothing. If we are wrong then the worst case scenario is many people die.
I don't know about you but I choose the former.

You may think you've chosen the former but the simple truth is there is virtually nothing you can do about it (preparation wise).
If a terrorist brings a nuke into the city you live in there's nothing affective you can do to "prepare" for it.
My point is "Farah's report" is not a news report at all. It's a possible scenario. There's a huge difference.
