You in the East hang on. There are more than enough illegal Mexicans to go around. You are getting the first edge about now. Attitudes here are already changing. I have been watching for some time now.

So Mesa, Arizona, is now considered “The East”? We are flooded with illegal immigrants, which is why we were the first state to demonstrate the power of the Minuteman Project. However, I don’t think Estrada nor Garza will be soft on illegal immigration just because of their skin color. They are conservative and will judge accordingly.

I believe it with Alberto "La Raza" Gonzalez. I think Garza is much more conservative. Simply being American hispanics doesn't mean they'll "throw the border gates wide open". If it were up to me, I'd deport every illegal I came across and raise bricks and razor wire all along the border.

If Gonzalez is chosen by the President it will either be pandering or extremely bad judgement blinded by friendship. Not sure which is worse.

Why do you think Garza is for open borders? Any evidence for that allegation?

LOL. But, if I did get the post, I would do what I said above and also add an additional screener at airports that stands there, looks at some peoples' outfits, and says "You, my dear, pose a fashion risk."

Welcome to FR, by the way. Hope you enjoy the site and don't become too addicted like the rest of us.

I will stand next to you with many of my Latino friends and help you. This is what many forget. A majority of the latino people in this country by birth or legal immigration are against illegal immigration. Probably more so than I am. It raises hell with those in Colorado who have title to land from the Spanish land grants and get real tired of being thought of as immigrants. The same for those in California. If you want to see real oppostion to illegal immigration talk to these people.

Typical anti-conservative bias from Houston's premiere fish-wrap company.

Of course that is your opinion and others may differ. How many hours do you think the President has had one on one with Gonzales over the years since he first became his adviser and confidant after taking the Governors seat?... I suspect many and that's a lot more than you or I suspect you have had with Gonzales. Thus I believe President Bush has a good insight into what he believes makes Gonzales tick. Certainly more personal insight than he has into most of the picks that have been praised or damned.

I really believe that President Bush believes that Gonzales would rule based upon his reading of what the Legislation said or the what the Constitution means... that is why so many have a problem with his one ruling regarding the PNA stating the plaintiff met the criteria of the legislature. I prefer someone to rule that way and let the legislature correct their mistakes rather than write law from the bench. jmo and yours may differ.

I could give a damn how they appear. I give a damn about what they will do to my "Country". If the man is purple and stands for law and the Constitution as it was written I am fine with that.

You know, sounds like not too many folks in this thread take Bush at his word.  He says he'll nominate a qualified person who will not legislate from the bench.  That to me means he'll pick someone in the relative neighborhood of Thomas or Scalia.

I think Bush will follow through.  I also think we're talking Hispanic because the media is talking Hispanic.

Based on his nominations to office at home and in Washington, I'd say Bush will continue on as a man of considerable surprise.

Me?  I'd like a Japanese or a Korean or a Chinese or a Thai or a Vietnamese  . . .

I think a lot of people are aware of how Bush feels about the border and Mr. Gonzales. I think many will not take the chance. Me included. When the Minute Men left and the border patrol was told to stand down I got a clear message.

LOL. Well, if nobody's opinion differed, I don't know if FR would be any fun. My biggest problem with Gonzalez isn't so much his past rulings as it is his affiliation with the state affiliate of the National Council of La Raza. It is NOT by any stretch a conservative or pro-American organization.

How is he affiliated?.... I've seen a lot of accusations of him being a member but can't find anything as to his membership.

It is NOT by any stretch a conservative or pro-American organization.

Well, La Raza Unida's first candidate (1972) for Texas Governor did play football at Baylor.  That's not just pro-American, its absolutely, down-home pro-Texan!

Of course, Ramsey Muniz did have this little problem with drug trafficking.  Just a little slip, mind you.  Or two or three of them.  Just enough to get him a life sentence without the possibility of parole.  To some radical minds, that makes the bad boy a political prisoner.

Lots of questionable history trailing behind that group, I do agree.

HERE'S THE LINK TO THE NEWS RELEASE FROM THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF LA RAZA BELOW:

http://www.nclr.org/content/news/detail/28109

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nov 10, 2004

NCLR WELCOMES NOMINATION OF GONZALES TO SERVE AS ATTORNEY GENERAL

Washington, DC – The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., today welcomed President Bush’s nomination of White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales to succeed John Ashcroft as Attorney General. If confirmed, Gonzales would be the first Hispanic ever to serve as Attorney General.

“We are very encouraged by the Gonzales nomination. We previously criticized the Bush Administration for not having an Hispanic in the cabinet since the departure of former HUD Secretary, now Senator-elect, Mel Martinez. We are pleased that one of the first acts since the President’s reelection both rectifies that situation and marks an historic milestone for the Latino community. Never before has an Hispanic served as head of one of the four major cabinet posts – Secretary of State, Treasury, Defense, and Attorney General,” stated Janet Murguia, NCLR Executive Director and COO.

Murguia also noted Gonzales’ ties to the Hispanic community throughout his career. “Alberto Gonzales served with distinction on the board of directors of one of NCLR’s oldest and most respected affiliates, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA) in Houston, Texas. Moreover, during his tenure as White House Counsel, he has been one of the most accessible members of the White House staff to NCLR and other Hispanic organizations,” added Murguia.

Murguia concluded, “We acknowledge that this is the first step of a long confirmation process that requires that his record be fully examined. That being said, Gonzales is a thoughtful, reasonable public servant, a man of his word, and we have every expectation that his nomination will be very well received in the Latino community.”

And you have a problem with a hispanic representing the law firm of Vincent & Elkins serving as a board member of an organization trying to help at risk children, providing and helping with their education/up bringing, drug intervention/programs in the Latino community, etc? If I read their info correctly this is a seperate non-profit that has purchased an affiliate membership in the National La Raza organization.... The AAMA is run by a local BOD

Personally I read their efforts as laudable but then what do I know. Guess they ought to turn their backs on the Houston/San Antinio/Texas Latinos.... Is the AAMA an organization that should be shunned? I don't know but maybe you have some insight.
