The question doesn't remain and was never a real question to begin with. Specter supported him; he supported Specter in return. Specter is a senior U.S. Senator from his own state from his own party. Santorum holds a leadership position and Specter was the incumbent, etc.
Had Toomey pulled it out, Santorum would have supported him.
I believe Toomey could have won, but not "clobbered" Hoeffel. It would have also been possible with Kerry's victory in the state - Santorum won in 2000 with Gore winning the state, and by a larger margin than did Kerry, I believe.
Santorum was an incumbent in 2000. Toomey wasnt in 2004.
Both Toomey and Hoeffel werent incumbents so their party affiliation R and D would carry extra weight, thus in a state like PA the D would have won unless Bush carried the state.
Same thing happened in OK. I knew even when Carson and Coburn were close in the polls, there was no way Carson was going to win.

Actually, the difference between Dubya & Jfn' was 144,248 (less than Ohio) and I wouldn't have been surprised if 50,000 or 60,000 conservatives failed to vote for Dubya because they were ticked at his endorsement of Specter.
Further, Lehigh County (Toomey's turf) went for Kerry, as did the Northeast part of the state (a conservative Dem stronghold). I suspect Pat might have got enough conservative Dems in those places to switch to Dubya to make the difference. Remember, Arlen practically campaigned against Bush. In fact some notorious Kerry/Specter signs popped up.
Of course, it's all speculation.
Toomey could also have picked up votes in the Philly suburbs, which, althought they're pro-abort, they do prefer low taxes. Toomey was good at delivering that message. Except for Chester County, Bush lost the Philly burbs, but still ran it close. Some crossover from there would have put Toomey over the top.
Good point. Toomey makes a great appearance, and is a good communicatior.
The send em to college demand was made by feminists in protest to the Bush marriage initiative. I saw a man who studied welfare to work women and he told his audience that college was not a good option for that crowd, because they had not been very good at school in the past.
They had the opportunity to prove their power by electing Toomey in the primary. The primary was close, and he lost.
Now you can blame that on santorum and the President but they case their vote with their own free will. If Toomey could not win a landslide in the primary, it is extremely doubtful he'd have won a majority in the larger turnout present in a Presidential year.
Ever since Hitlery's book first came out, I would scorn it, saying it takes PARENTS, not a stinkin' village. Well, for RATs in general and DUms in particular, it takes a village idiot.
People vote on the information they receive. If you trusts someone who strongly endorses a candidate, then you are probably going to vote for that candidate.
But in this case it was not even a matter of Bush or Santorum endorsing Toomey. It was not even a matter of endorsing Specter. If both had not campaigned very hard for Arlen, Toomey would have won and that would have been a shocking upset.
As a woman (and a woman with a newborn baby), I think it's really disturbing when the Left makes statements suggesting that every woman should or does value the freedom to abort over the protection of her unborn child. Abortion isn't a choice, like they claim it is. Deciding to use a condom is a choice. Freedom of choice as abortion is an evil that indulges the fears of women --and those fears range from a fear of raising a child that has just a chance of being defective or just an overall fear of being a parent in general.
It is no joke. I refused to get an amnio or AFP during my pregnancy because I heard of too many stories about how they showed up defects --and stories where the ob/gyn tried to convince the mother to abort because of the chance of a defect-- only to have the child come out perfectly normal. My husband thought I should get the tests done so that we could prepare ourselves in case there was a defect. And you'd think that that would be the attitude of health care professionals -to do the tests so that parents can prepare themselves or in case there is a defect that can be fixed in utero. But when doctors and nurses asked me about my refusal to take the tests, every single one said something to the effect of "If you're not planning to terminate, it doesn't matter."

I wouldn't mind reading it, if it appeared in my mailbox. At least he had the guts to say what would happen if the SCOTUS ruled in favor of sodomy in the Lawrence/Texas decision, and everyone pilloried him, and he was right.
