Good article. I'm taking my Grandma out for burgers this weekend to celebrate her 94th birthday. Mmm Apple Pan.

Amazing to think about what she went through.

Happy Birthday Tom!
I believe, absolutely, that we have lived through the most fascinating, productive and transcendent period in history.
And you shall forever be one of the more interesting parts of it.

If I live to be 1000 I won't be half as sharp as Dr. Sowell. Happy Birthday Sir!

Sowell limited himself to the defining war and personal memories.
He left out all the wonders of science and technology; from the atom to black holes; rockets, satellites, cell phones, routine casual world travel; whimsical personal communications world wide, instantly; computers for everyone to rival the abilities of multi-million dollar ones of the 50s.

This period is simply awesome.

It is interesting to note what has happened during a lifetime. I was born in 1957, the year of Sputnik. I have seen the Presidencys of ten men. Incredible as it seems, though Sowell is 28 years older than me, he has only seen 13 Presidents - because FDR hogged it for four terms! Elvis was a big deal only during three decades while Frank Sinatra sang for 7 decades. I remember comics costing 12 cents, a dime newspaper, a dime for a phone call, 29 cents for a gallon of gas, 30 cents for a pack of smokes. When I first started going to the movies, it was 75 cents for 12 and younger and 1.50 over that. You got a cartoon with your movie, also. The closed the air-conditioned schools in DC about a month ago because it got to hot - 94 degrees. I remember sitting in absolutely stiffling classrooms and also freezing later on in the year. I remember party line phones - do they still have those? What do others remember?

Intelligentsia indeed, I would hve used different words, but then I don't have the class Thomas Sowell has.

Work with a 75 year old. Although physically slowed down some, his mind is very sharp and alert as is his 75 year old wife who skis and walks a 7-mile run once a year.

Yesterday was my last day of being under 50.

I had to post the news somewhere, and this was as good a place as any.
