No need to panic anyone. We'll let the liberals do that.

Why do I get the feeling that this will be like the controlled burns that the forest sevice uses to start out of control
fires.

Probably have the same effect as shooting a bb pellet into jello. Fireworks? Only in their dreams.

It will not upset the balance of the solar system.
As long as we're not overdrawn.

I think the earthquake that caused the indonesian tsunami had more of an effect on the earths orbit than deep impact will have on the roid.

Well, if I let my more superstitious side get the better of me, I'd say that we're about to commit a gross violation upon the music of the spheres. Zodiacally, you'd be looking at altering fate to a certain degree, of ourselves, our nations, everything.
But, all this is just a beautiful, old pre-Enlightenment attempt at explaining the workings of creation. Nothing to fear. That is, unless it's far less dense than anticipated. In which case, we might have several different pieces of the former comet, same periodicity but different trajectories... potentially not so good.
I'm looking forward to the show, nonetheless.

Then again there is Murphys law and the law of unintended consequences. Not laws of physics but applicable none the less.

It's hard to believe the luddite wing of Free Republic hasn't been raising holy heck over this.
Well, there's still time for (uninformed) righteous rage.

The feeling I get about this collision project is - where do we get the idea that we have the right to possibly destroy this object? Here's something that's been traveling in space since the universe began. And we think we can just send something to collide with it in the name of science?
It takes a lot of arrogance to decide that we can do this.

Wait for it.....No, it's BUSH'S fault!
