Republicans are floating the possibility of giving John Bolton a recess appointment as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Raise the sails, mateys, raise the sails full.
Filibustering Democrats did just about everything imaginable to smear Mr. Bolton and scuttle his ship as it prepared to sail into Turtle Bay. Some tacks were dangerous -- such as demanding to see classified information that, knowing this crowd, surely would have been leaked. Others were silly -- such as saying Mr. Bolton wasn't very nice.
What's needed at the U.N., of course, is a fella who represents the best interests of the United States and takes no guff. Democrats are upset that Bolton won't sing "Kumbaya" with the One Worlders, the crowd only too happy to take American money then use it against America.
Valuable time was wasted in the three-month pillorying of a good man. That's why President Bush should, upon congressional recess next week, use the recess power vested in him by Article I, Section 2 (Paragraph 3) of the Constitution to get Bolton on the job until the 110th Congress convenes in January 2007.
This kind of recess appointment, by the way, is court-tested all the way back to the 1820s.
So do it, Mr. President. Put the Democrats (and Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio) in their place and put John Bolton in his.....

Well, only W has the authority to make a recess appointment.I agree there are some "wimpy" Republicans, but I don't include W in that group.
If W grants Bolton a recess appointment, the 'Rats will continuously piss and moan like Granny Moses. And in the process of doing so, they will convert more and more voters into patriotic 'Icans.
Not going to happen IMHO.

Frist said yesterday "no more cloture votes".Frist goes to the White House today to inform W.Frist comes out of the White House and says "the president wants an up or down vote,we will have more votes".
I hope they vote every damn day until they leave for recess.I'll bet you this,Frist ain't going back to the White House.Now you tell me,who's the Big Dog?
W can say,"we gave the Democrats every opportunity to stop their obstruction, but now we need to have our man at the UN".
Let's just see how many more times we will hear Frist say that there will be an up or down vote on Bolton. Remember the filibuster fiasco? Seemed like every week we heard the nuclear option was going to happen. Did it? No. Whose call was that?

I don't think Bush is in any hurry to recess appoint Bolton because that would give the rats an "out" of the disastrous (for them) filibuster "deal". ("President Bush is circumventing the will of the Senate and has therefore violated the spirit of "the deal"! And so as far as us Democrats are concerned the deal is now OFF! Harumphh!")
Giving the rats a way out of the deal is the last thing Bush and the Republicans want. I'm afraid that a recess appointment might do that.
The Senate Republicans need to concentrate on the judges. That's the main thing. They need to get as many judges confirmed as possible, as quickly as possible. This Bolton stuff is just a sideshow, a little raw meat the Republicans throw to the rats every once in awhile so the rats can give their goofball base something to cheer about between waves of judge confirmations.
I figure the Republicans will throw Bolton up there every two weeks or so, just so the rats can scratch their filibuster itch. Then it's right back to the judges, all of whom are now assured confirmation thanks to "the deal".
In the meantime, the House will deal with Bolton and the UN in its own way. "The Democrats don't want Bolton?", House Republican leaders will exclaim. "Then clearly they don't want reform. And since the Democrats don't want UN reform, then it is up to us Republicans in the House to protect for the nation's taxpayers by shutting down the pipeline of US taxdollars to the corrupt UN."
The House already voted to halve UN funding, but the rest is on the table, I am sure. This Bolton fiasco will only make it easier for the House to keep defunding the UN, and easier for the Senate to agree with whatever the House does.
It all works out in the end.
And really - - who gives a rat's behind about the stinking UN anyways?

The President retains his ace,the recess appointment.
Now, if you're saying W was unsuccessful in arm-twisting, hey,I agree.But that gets back to your "wimpy" Republicans. W will have his ambassador,with or without the "wimps".
The next Secretary General, Bill Clinton.
But who will it be? Probably not Bolton.
