If they build a super WalMart, Harris Teeter is doomed.

Nonsense.
There's a Super Wal-Mart in my town [population approx. 60,000] and a Harris Teeter.
Not only is the Harris Teeter doing well, they just added onto the store!

There are also about four Food Lions and a "Save-A-Lot", which is pretty new.

You got it.

That HT is without question the best one in town. And in my opinion, really the only grocery store to get quality produce at a good price. Other stores have old wilted stuff at higher prices.

But for meat, Scotts Galaxy Foods on 55 is the place to go.

The only good thing I can say about Winn-Dixie is that they have good prescription prices and their Coke products are always on sale. That is about the extent of it though!

I don't know what the solution is or even if there is one but I know why we don't shop there.

There is a nice large well stocked Winn Dixie close to us. There is also a Wal-Mart Super Center which does not have as good a selection and is a tiny bit dirtier tho still pretty clean.

There is no comparison on prices. WD is way way higher. That is the reason we don't shop there period.

Don't stop in a Food Lion then... ;)

As I said on the state board growing up all we had was Winn Dixie and a rare Food Lion. But Harris Teeter and Lowe's Foods around here far surpass either FL or WD in looks, selection, and even price

In Pasadena Tx we had two Food Lions, both closed and never reopened as groceries. One is a church and the other is a clinic. Neither employ as many as before.

Would that be the one at Center and Spencer, next to Luby's and Burger King? =P

The only time I would go to WD was when they had Hams on sale for like $1.99 a pound. Or 2 for 1 on fake crab (when compared to other stores prices it was like 4 for 1).

Luckily my wife does the bulk of the shopping.

"Another American company run into the ground by its management and who suffers?"

In our neighborhood, the old Winn-Dixie closed several years ago, because it lost customers to a spanking new Publix that opened. I suspect that's not an isolated incidence.

LOL!! We were just talking about that place here in the office. I remember when it used to be a Piggly Wiggly. Guess Wal-Mart put them out of business too ;)

Really though, you're sure about that place? It looks a little rough on the outside. Course I hang out at the LB, who the heck am I to talk?

I drink Pepsi, and CVS and Eckerd generally have battles for my business.

And they're dirty.

Having been in the food service equipment business, I can tell you that you have NO IDEA.
There is a reason they all smelled funky.

I was behind the meat & bakery counters and in the backs of several stores, and stopped shopping at WD as a result.

(BTW: I left that company in Dec '99)

Good afternoon. I hope all is well with you.

WalMart

Yep, here too.

I don't need to go into the free market dynamics of the competition, supply and demand, economies of scale, those particular equations, but I will say that Publix and Kash n Karry are doing really well. In the same geographical constraints.

Just be happy us yankees haven't brought Wegman's down here yet.

The day Wegman's opens in NC it is the day Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Lowes, and all the others go out of business.

Southerners always complain about us Yankees and "the way we did it up there", but I can say with complete confidence, without question, we do grocery stores far far better.

It's called capitalism. Free-enterprise. In an efficient economic system the poorly managed/poor producers are weeded out. This allows more efficient companies to dominate the marketplace.
