well there are some very loud republicans :)

Guillermo had it right. They didnt want a roll call vote. That is why no Democrat challenged the voice vote this time.

Aren't we already paying them in the form of taxes anyway?

Yes, taxes collected here in the US, but, they wanted to place a UN tax on the American people, and collect a world tax on top of the "dues we have been paying to the UN. They also just voted to withhold those "dues" until the UN cleans up it's act.

I say get us out of the UN!

I'm stunned that it was unanimous. could it be possible that the representatives are finally getting the message from the folks back home? Nah.

I'm pretty sure that in a voice vote, if they call for "Nays" and no one responds, it gets written down as "unanimous". I don't think there's anything particularly sneaky or wrong about that either, even if not everyone voted "Yea".

It wasn't unanimous - it was a voice vote.

Ah thanks for the clarification...that makes sense. Giving themselves an out somewhere.

"Libertarians continue to have the best ideas. The Republican Party should become more libertarian."

Actually, this was a Republican idea long before what's-her-name ever advocated letting everyone who was not just like her die in the streets.

Unlike the Libertarian Party, Congressman Paul is pro-life.

It is always a good idea to cut off the UN's allowance. It is good that Paul has sponsored the amendment referenced in the article.

Those two things having been said, Paul grows more eccentric with each passing day. Rep. Paul is reported to have voted against Henry Hyde's bill to cut the US contributions to the UN by half if it fails to "reform" itaself in specified ways. I personally would prefer cutting off all of the allowance immediately regardless of whether they "reform" or not and launching military strikes against the UN as deemed necessary or merely desirable.

Paul has become a 1930s style isolationist, opposes the Iraq War and now engages in post-session yakathons known as Special Orders to ramble on and on with paleocowardly suggestions for why we should simply stay home and "mind our own business" until the next time some Osama bin Laden decides to whack 3,000+ Americans to show off for the world.

He also has become a full-fledged member of the Blame America First Club.

Other than the first two, these are emphatically NOT good ideas.

He explained that it was because of some of the "reforms" they had to make, which would give them even more authority and power then they have now.

Get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US.

"I'm fairly surprised that this was a unanimous vote -- were there a lot of RAT abstentions?"

No, the Democrats were down in the basement holding impeachment hearings. Which, if CSPAN coverage is any indication are much more important than a vote to withhold a fraction of the money we spend to keep the United Nations afloat.
