I don't doubt that aristocratic audiences didn't like the 20th. I confess I heard no evidence of the demonic in the music, but will listen again. I have no problem conceding that Mozart possessed greater technical skill than Beethoven, but it is a skill that will be recognized only by people that are educated in music theory. Beethoven is and will remain for most people the pivotal figure in music history. He changed music, which cannot be said of Mozart. Before Beethoven music was an art for the elite; after him, for the people or more accurately for a rising and educated middle class.
