When Woodward was on Meet the Press with Russert during the Lewinsky scandal, it was obvious the only reason he agreed to come on the program was to sigh loudly and complain that the impeachment of Clinton was not nearly as big a scandal as his precious Watergate.

That was it. He gave no insight into the only impeachment of an elected President in the history of the nation. His only interest was in his safeguarding his cash cow.

"How in the Sam Hill can you be the no. 2 man in the F.B.I. and in charge of day-to-day operations and be a
whistleblower?"

When Hoover died, Felt was technically the #1 man in the FBI until Gray was appointed.

"I don't think Woodward and Bernstein are particularly bright."

You are probably right about Bernstein.

However, Woodward apparently was in the Navy Security Group as an officer. No one gets into that group unless they have high IQ and are in the top re scores on the tests officers and enlisted take when they join the Navy.

Woodward is a very intelligent liar and manipulator.

W&B have also been caught in several lies...Deep Throat wasn't a chain smoker in 1973...Felt had given up smoking in 1946. Felt drinks martinis, not scotch. Felt wasn't a White House insider. Felt wasn't snitching for altruistic reasons, either.

I don't think Felt was Deep Throat. I don't think there ever was a Deep Throat. I have not doubt that Felt leaked to the Washington Post.. I think a significant number of things Woodward published were just analysis stated as if it were fact.

I read with fascination all of these articles and posts about the Felt affair and still have trouble wrapping my mind around one simple fact. Under J. Edgar Hoover, even a lowly FBI clerk would have been fired in a fraction of a second if they had so much as been suspected of divulging information obtained on the job to outsiders. Good thing for Felt he outlived Hoover. I know whereof I speak. Felt was on the FBI payroll, paid to do work for the bureau, and funneled information which was not his to divulge, to W/B. Later retires and gets hefty pension. Now wants to double dip and get more money because W/B won't share their blood money with him. Family wants to continue living in the most expensive city in the country instead of moving to an affordable location so feels justified in the money grubbing taking place. The insanity of it all has got my Irish up so have to go do something more productive than trying to make sense of good RAT betrayals and bad Republican ones.

I fully agree. Felt was certainly part of everything, but he wasn't the only one. Here's some stuff I posted the other night.

Apparently this information served well to keep the identity of Deep Throat and the sanctity of the cash cow sancrosanct.

Woodward claimed to have been told things by Casey on his deathbed--when Casey was no longer around to contradict him.

John Keegan in his book Fields of Battle describes a one-on-one meeting with Casey in the mid-1980s. Afterwards the people escorting Keegan around asked him what Casey had said to him.

"'I'm not altogether sure,' I answered, 'I couldn't really understand.' There was muffled, insider laughter....'We call him Mumbles,' a member of the group commented, 'the only man in Washington who doesn't need a secure telephone.'"

Are you saying Woodward lied to us in his stories in order to tell us the truth.

Isn't that a bit like, we had to destroy the village in order to save it.

"Are you saying Woodward lied ...,"

The whole thing is a subterfuge - the liberal MSM craetes its own reality.

The details about the scotch and smokes was to throw off the public as to the real identity.

The early footage, right after this story broke a few days ago, was of Woodward leading Bernstien into his G'town home. All I could think was they had to spend some time together to get their stories straight.

and possibly re-write that book of theirs due out next month

"Woodward is a very intelligent liar and manipulator".

I'm not convinced of that.

I realize this may not be the best indicator of his intelligence, but I watched him a few months ago on "Celebrity Jeopardy", and he was barely able to form complete sentences in the short "interview" phase, and was thoroughly trounced by Tucker Carlson and Mary Matlin in the game.

It was actually kind of embarrassing. I tried to feel bad for him, but I was too busy rejoicing in the public exposure of yet another leftist hero as an idiot.

And it wasn't that he was just too slow on the buzzer. He fumbled several questions that any "Washington Insider" should have easily answered correctly, and couldn't even answer anything remotely related to mainstream American culture.

My impression of him was that he is a very slow-witted, droll, and conversationally inept mousy little man.

He may be a good writer (maybe not, since most journalists, at least at major publications, are subject to fairly rigorous editorial processes), but he certainly can't talk his way out of a box.

There's probably some interesting psychology at work there (the whole "social outcast who blossoms through the power of the pen" or something).

I expected more from a man who helped bring down a presidency. It was a let-down, because he hardly seemed a worthy adversary for the likes of Liddy, Erlichman, and Co.

I've know Woodward for 50 years now. I walked to high school with him almost every day down Main Street in Wheaton. He was a dork then, and I mean a dork before the word became slang, and he's an even bigger dork now! I keep waiting to run into him at the Wheaton Old-Timers Meetings, but I guess he's too big a media star for that kind of fun!

3 decades of boozing and smoozing in DC may have pickled his brain a little.
