KABUL (Pajhwok Afghan News): A Mullah Omar look-alike, whose pictures were prominently published in Pakistan-based newspapers and provided to American authorities, has called for punitive action against whom he branded as ‘fraudsters.’
Photographs of Syed Gul Agha from the Dand district of Kandahar, a mirror image of the Taliban supremo, were carried by a magazine 30 months back and an Urdu-language newspaper in April last.The publications - flashing the phonies as rare snapshots of the reclusive Taliban leader - created a stir in the international media, leaving the unsuspecting man in a tight spot.
In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, Gul Agha recalled Kandahar residents Khalid Ahmed and Naqibullah had taken his photos two years back. “They wanted to have my pictures as a keepsake; they also photographed Haji Shahzada and then misused them without any qualms.”
Gul Agha insisted he had no links to Khalid Ahmed, who was granted political asylum by the United States in return for the mock pics. “I don’t know who he is and what his motive was. Right now he is in the United States,” he said, identifying Naqibullah as Haji Shahzada’s son-in-law. Haji Shahzada - captured by US forces from his house a month after his pictures appeared in the media - was freed after spending 26 months in captivity at the Bagram Airbase and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
Approached for comments, US military spokesman in Kabul Cindy Moore declined to give any information about the arrest and release of the Kandahar resident. She argued they could not provide details about every individual held at an American detention facility.
For his part, Gul Agha said he was forced to leave his home after the photos were published. Although presently he is back in Kandahar city with his family, security fears continue to haunt him.”Our farmland remained barren for two years in the wake of our shifting from the village. I couldn’t even take my son to hospital when he was wounded in an explosion,” he continued.
Calling for stern action against Khalid and Naqibullah for misusing the snapshots they had promised to keep as a memento, he also demanded the arrest of those who published them with a Mullah Omar caption. “Obviously, the whole sordid affair was driven by ulterior motives,” he alleged.
Despite several attempts, Pajhwok failed to obtain the newspapers’ views. However, a senior Pakistani journalist claimed the pictures were of Mullah Omar. Rahimullah Yousufzai maintained the photo of Mullah Omar was taken in 1979 when he was engaged in anti-government operations in Sangisar area of Kandahar. Nonetheless, he hastened to acknowledge Gul Agha might closely resemble Mullah Omar.
Mullah Mohammad Salim, Kandahar Ulema Council’s member from Dand district, revealed he recently accompanied Gul Agha to Kabul for a meeting with President Hamid Karzai, who assured to tackle the issue. Interior Ministry spokesman Lutfullah Mashal, who learnt of the episode from the media, promising legal action against the miscreants if named by Gul Agha.

Khalilzad praises Pak steps against al-Qaeda
WASHINGTON (Online): Zalmay Khalilzad, President George W. Bush’s special envoy and the former ambassador to Afghanistan, has praised President Musharraf’s steps against Al-Qaeda and Taliban.
Speaking at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing to confirm his appointment as US ambassador to Iraq, Khalilzad said: “If it’s a 10-mile journey, we are in mile 4,” measuring the progress in Afghanistan. While many achievements can be counted there was a long way to go yet, he noted. “Big issues” remain, among them “more needs to be done for Afghanistan’s relations with neighbours whose territories are being used by Taliban and Al Qaeda.”
When pressed to name the neighbours, Khalilzad said, “Certainly some elements of the Taliban and Al Qaeda went to Pakistan, and some went to Iran. Pakistan is doing very well and I must praise the efforts of General (President Pervez) Musharraf, on all fronts.
But we would like to encourage President Musharraf to do as much as possible. I think the two countries need to do more to implement the (accountability and reconciliation agreement).”
During his testimony, Khalilzad said the US had no intention of establishing a permanent base in Iraq and that it would take less than the estimated 10 years to put down the insurgency there.
Senator Richard Lugar, chairman of the committee, introducing Khalilzad and noted his achievements in Afghanistan where an election has been held.
Khalilzad, whose nomination is expected to go smoothly unlike several other presidential nominees, said Afghanistan had succeeded in collecting 98 percent of weapons in the hands of militias, disbanded 85 percent of the militias, increased its army from a mere 5,000 a year ago to 25,000, but that these forces need continuous retraining, and that reconstruction of the country remained a challenge.

‘Suicide bomber’ sisters arrested
ISLAMABAD: Police has arrested two sisters belonging to the defunct Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ) militant group, which has links to Al Qaeda, who were allegedly plotting suicide attacks against Shias in the country, officials said on Thursday.
The pair, identified by police as Arifa and Habiba and said to be aged between 18 and 20, were seized from a hideout in Swat early this week.

According to details, Iranian Security forces arrested 58 Pakistanis for illegally entering Iran on forged documents.
The Pakistanis who were arrested belonged from various areas of Punjab.
Meanwhile the arrested Pakistanis were later handed over to Levies officials for further investigations.

MILF: JI bombers hiding in Mindanao
Muslim guerrillas said Thursday they were helping government troops capture two Indonesians blamed for the deadly 2002 Bali bombings and confirmed that the terror suspects were hiding near their southern strongholds with eight other militants.
The two suspected bombers—Pitono, also known as Dulmatin, and Umar Patek—have been sighted in a mountainous region bordering the southern provinces of Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur, often with al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf extremists, said Moro Islamic Liberation Front spokesman Eid Kabalu.
Kabalu spoke a day after Deputy National Security Adviser Virtus Gil announced that the pair from the Jemaah Islamiah terror network, which originated from Indonesia, was plotting fresh attacks and attending a training camp in Mindanao.
Gil said the suspects have met with Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khaddafi Janjalani. One of them, Dulmatin, was last seen near Maguindanao a few days ago.
The main Muslim separatist group, the MILF, is conducting peace talks with the government and has pledged to arrest foreign militants in the rebel territory. Their presence has threatened to derail negotiations to end a three-decades-old insurgency.
Kabalu told the Associated Press that the two militants did not appear to be actively involved in plotting attacks against the Philippine government.
He said they frequently roam the hinterlands with about eight other compatriots and may have sought refuge in the southern Mindanao region because of a two-year cease-fire between the MILF and the government.
“They’re here probably to rest and relax because they’re being hunted down in their own homeland in Indonesia and we have this cease-fire agreement in place,” Kabalu said by telephone.
“They’re constantly on the move in small groups. That’s a good strategy because that would make it more difficult to locate them,” he said.
The MILF has been accused of providing sanctuary and training ground to Jemaah Islamiah. Its action to help capture the two suspected bombers is seen as a crucial test for the guerrillas.
The government earlier gave the MILF the names and pictures of 53 suspected terrorists and criminals, including those of Dulmatin and Patek, and asked the rebels to investigate. --AP

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. -- Seven students at an Eastside middle school were taken to hospitals when they complained of dizziness and flulike symptoms on Thursday, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.
Two wings of Snoqualmie Middle School were evacuated as firefighters treated the students, who fell ill at about 11:30 a.m.
Six of the students were taken to Snoqualmie Valley Hospital and later sent home. A student who lost consciousness for a time was taken to Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue.
A hazmat team was unable to detect anything.
