Democracy is, as P.J. O'Rourke (IIRC) put it, two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner. In a constitutional republic, the sheep is off the menu, no matter what the wolves want.
To put it another way, in a constitutional republic, the majority cannot vote to have the minority boiled in oil, no matter how well the idea is polling.

Fred Reed, I believe, has truly done what he advocates: after many decades as a good-ole-boy journalist/columnist (including many years with the Washington Times), he has seceded from the U.S. I think he's living in some remote corner of Mexico now. While I sympathize with much of his analysis, I don't accept his conclusion. For its many faults, there's still no better place on earth to live.

Very nice!
I've saved it for my daughters *school* we have together in the summer. :)
No one understands what the word 'allegiance' means, anymore. A lot of people will post comments just ROASTING people who are uncomfortable saying the Pledge.
They can flame away. I've always been uncomfortable with it since I found out it means fealty.
I can't believe no on remembers Americans in the colonial times flat refusing to swear fealty to the King of England, yet Americans do it every day, and never bat an eye.
The Constitution says we can be bound by 'oath or affirmation', and that's exactly what the Pledge IS.
An oath to obey a federal government, when IT should actually be obeying US!

Yes and they must come get you because of their weakness (fear of individuals and their private thoughts). Why would a govt with apparently unlimited power be afraid of free thinkers ? Because they rely on the brain washed mob rule principle.

One must prepare for the worst senario. An exit strategy is not an admission of cowardice, but of wise planning; an alternate site to retreat to. Another rendezvous point where the group can reorganize itself and prepare for another opportunity to maybe live in peace and be left alone.
