I am hoping that some great discussion will ensue after each of these mini-“lectures.” I expect to do about 8-10 in all, perhaps one or two in modern architecture at the end.

My favorite painting is at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. I really appreciate how he managed to capture the temperament and moods of these two young women. It was painted shortly after the Civil War.

The young lady on the right seems to have higher ambitions than the field work. Her friend on the left seems to be thinking of just getting by for the day. I spent an afternoon one day drawing it, loving it.

Could you respond to my post #79? I'm sorry I couldn't get a better picture for you. You were so right in saying:

I also like the way the “stories” of his paintings are open-ended. Will her husband return from the sea? Will the fisherman make it back to his boat? When I spent an afternoon with this work, it felt like I could truly understand what was going through the minds of these two girls. Then I wanted to know what life would hold for them five or ten years later. It's not just art to look at from an objective distance but it brings you in and makes you wonder.

Thanks for the thread.

Please ad me to your ping list. I am a huge fan of Winslow Homer and If I wasn't a broke farmer working 12 hours off the farm I would fill my crappy farm house with his reproductions.
I also appreciate the lectures and look forward to them all.
Thanks

Thank you for the art appreciation class RProfessor. The Homer works are beautiful. My tastes have mostly tended toward American and Indian southwestern art paintings, pottery and sculpture. I'm also looking forward to your discussion of modern architecture. Please include me on your ping list. :o)

I'm an artist by profession, but have never taken an art course, except for a few worthless high school get-in-touch-with-your-feelings classes. In high school, I gave up on formal art education since so much of it seemed like crap. As it turns out, I was prophetic, literally.

Anyway, modern art seems like the longest-running hoax in history, kept alive only by financial speculators and academics.

I prefer realism, or any related style. I like the paintings you selected above, particularly the image of the men in the boat. I have no tolerance for abstract and modern art.

Excellent, professor. Much appreciated. Although I have a BA from a large northeastern school, for our coursework we had to choose between music and art history, and I chose music. About ten years after graduation I took a mail order art history course (Time-Life?) which actually wasn't too bad.

And, I go to museums in NYC, but appreciate the background that you are giving. It helps--keep it up!!

When I look at those paintings... I get a very strong inclination to go running. And that's exactly what I'll do right this minute. You should advertise your lecture series as a weight loss aid.
